Southwest Weekend Schedule

It's another busy weekend of hockey across the Southwest as the Dallas Stars will highlight it with the final of a 6 game run against Northwest Division teams as the Stars will face off against the Colorado Avalanche tonight as the Stars will face them for the 2nd time this week as the Stars will look for revenge after the Avs beat them 4-0 back on Sunday night. This time though, the game is at home where the Stars have won 7 of their last 8 at the AAC to help them stay in the playoff chase.

Currently the Stars are in 11th right now, but are just 3 points back of 8th place Calgary. After tonight, it's another home game Sunday night against the Phoenix Coyotes where after this game, just 6 games will be left before the NHL'S Olympic Break begins on Feb. 15

All 3 AHL Teams are busy as the Texas Stars have benefited from a bad week from the Milwaukee Admirals, after a 5-2 Texas win on Wednesday, the Admirals loss ed 4-1 to Hamilton last night. It's a weekend set with the Abbotsford Heat, before a heading up north to take on the Peoria Rivermen and Milwaukee Admirals on Sunday and Tuesday on the road.

Texas is currently tied for 2nd with Peoria, but just 1 point back of the Milwaukee Admirals for the West Division Lead. This will be a good shot against a surprising Abbotsford Heat team who is in the midst of the North Division Playoff Race currently in 4th and within striking distance of the Manitoba Moose.

Houston heads up north to Milwaukee on Friday night where hopefully getting them on a losing streak will benefit the Aeros tonight where this will be the only game of the weekend before the Aeros head on the road to face the Peoria Rivermen before coming back home to take on the Abbotsford Heat on 2/1.

San Antonio looks to use the momentum that they found with wins over the Toronto Marlies with a trip to New York to take on the Syracuse Crunch as they are on the early portion of what is called the "Rodeo Road Trip" as the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo will have the AT&T Center busy for the next couple of weeks as they next home game won't be until Feb. 26 when they will finally come back to take on teams throughout the North and West Divisions, and even a rare trip to the East Division tonight.

In the Central Hockey League, the Texas Brahmas and Laredo Bucks will face off in Laredo as the 2 teams are fighting it out for the 3rd spot in the Conference is on a 2 game South Texas Road Trip with games against the Laredo Bucks and Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees this weekend.

Their D/FW Rival Allen will host the Corpus Christi Icerayz who are in 7th place tonight, then head up north for a 2 game road trip against the Mississippi Riverkings and the Missouri Mavericks on Saturday and Tuesday.

RGV begins an important stretch of their season where 6 of their next 10 are on the road with a trip to the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs before hosting the Texas Brahmas on Saturday, then heading to Corpus Christi to take on the Icerayz on Sunday afternoon.

Finally in the NAHL, the Texas Tornado begin a stretch where 8 of their next 11 games are on the road with a weekend tilt against the Topeka Roadrunners where the Tornado are in Topeka looking to comeback after getting sweeped by the Wichita Falls Wildcats. For the Wildcats, Mike Flanagan continues his reign as the new head coach with a home weekend series against the Fairbanks Ice Dogs.

Finally the San Antonio Rampage are looking to return to the playoffs after being one of the league's worst teams last year. They currently in last, but are quickly gaining ground on the rest of the Division with 45 points.

"As part of our Hockey Night in Texas initiative, we're excited to showcase the talented AHL Teams and players across the state." said FSN Southwest Senior VP/GM Jon Heidtke. "This series will gave fans throughout the state a chance to witness the exciting style of hockey played in Texas and will allow to follow the future Stars of the NHL on Television. We look forward to a successful partnership as we continue to promote hockey in Texas.

Jacob Fallon lands with the Indiana Ice

After leaving the USNTDP without much explanation a few weeks ago up in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It was reveled last week that he will play the rest of the season with the defending USHL Clark Cup Champion Indiana Ice. The Southlake native who will turn 18 next month haven't seen much ice time this season where he played just 6 games with the USNTDP where he scored just 2 points in a game back on 12/19 against the Youngstown Phantoms just before the League's Winter Break.

While some thought that he was leaving for the Seattle Thunderbirds where his Major Junior Rights are, he is also committed to play his college hockey with the Michigan Wolverines after this season. To get to the point where he can impress both the Thunderbirds and the Michigan program's, he will need to pick up the pace the rest of the season with the Ice where in 8 total games has just 2 points and hasn't shown very much in the way of being a scoring threat, being physcial away from the puck or hasn't been great on defense.

He's hoping to make a fresh start after a less then successful time with the USNTDP. He's hoping to put that time behind him and focus on helping the Ice move up in the East Division, and be in a position to challenge the Omaha Lancers, Fargo Force and Green Bay Gamblers as they are the main contenders for the USHL Clark Cup Championship this season.

Hopefully, just the fact that's he done with the USNTDP situation and getting a chance to make a fresh start at this point in his hockey career will hopefully help out the team and Fallon getting more valuable playing time on the ice. As for the team record, the Ice are in 3rd place in the East Division with a 19-14-2 record (40 points), the Ice trail the Cedar Rapids Roughriders by 4 points and 1st round home ice, while they lead the Waterloo Blackhawks and Chicago Steel by 4 and 5 points as the 2 teams battle for the final playoff spot in the East.

He made his Indiana debut last weekend in a weekend series against the Tri-City Storm where he didn't register a point and getting used to his new surroundings. This weekend coming up as the Ice will have 3 games, starting with a Friday and Saturday weekend tilt with the Chicago Steel, then it's a return to Ann Arbor to take on the USNTDP on Sunday afternoon.

The East Division win's very tight USHL All Star Game in OT

The 2010 USHL All Star Game turned out to be a very tight back and fourth affair where the game was very close and neither side was out of it at all for the entire night. In the end, it was Indiana's Nick Bailen, the physical forward who's been with the team since 2005 has racked up more then 300 penalty minutes in his junior career is the unlikely hero for the East Division back on Tuesday night.

Press Release from the United States Hockey League Website: www.ushl.com

Des Moines Buccaneers forward Ryan Walters registered the fourth hat trick in USHL All Star Game History, but it was defensemen Nick Bailen who was the hero for the East Division to win in the final seconds of OT to win the All Star Game for the East Division.

In a game that saw the clubs trade goals all evening, it was only fitting that it needed more then 60 minutes to decide the outcome. It was a night full of goals, saves, great passes, and several big hits in a night that saw everything and then some. Nate Condon (Fargo Force) opened the scoring just under 3 minutes into the contest to give the West Division a 1-0 lead. Tom Serratore (Youngstown Phantoms), a late All Star Addition, and Max Cook of the Indiana Ice responded with a pair of goals in favor of the East Division. Ryan Walters (Des Moines Buccaneers) scored the first of his 3 goals to even the contest heading into the first intermission.

Walters gave the West their second lead of the game early in the 2nd period. Shane Berschbach was the 2nd Indiana Ice player of the night to tally a goal when he evened the game later in the frame with a brilliant pass from Ice teammate Max Cook.

Tyler Barnes (Waterloo Blackhawks) helped the East Division regain the lead, but Ryan Walters finished off his hat trick a little more then 6 minutes later to tie the score again.

After 60 minutes of play, the game went into OT with each team skating 4 players a side. It appeared to be heading into a shootout but defensemen Nick Bailey (Indiana Ice) fired a puck that found the back of the night with just 13 seconds remaining in the OT period to give the East Division the 5-4 win.

Troy Grosenick (Cedar Rapids Roughriders) earned the victory in net making 14 saves after entering the game midway through the 2nd period.

Nate Condon was named the player of the Game for the West Division, while Nick Bailen was honored as the player of the game for the East Division. The game's MVP went to Ryan Walters with his 3 goal performance.

As for Omaha Lancers forward and Dallas Native C.J. Ludwig, he had no points in the game and was a -2 for the night. He also fired off 2 shots on goal, in all, not a great night but he will defiantly remember this experience and he will benefit against playing against the league's best.

League Rankings as of 1/25

Here's a look at league rankings for the Major Junior, Canadian Junior A and NCAA Rankings as we reach the playoff and tournament runs are starting to get into high gear.

Major Junior

The St. John Seadogs have used their amazing 38-7-1 mark as the best record in the QMJHHL and with a 22 game winning streak earlier this season have put the Seadogs on a blistering pace to finish as the best team in the regular season and the top team when the QMJHL Playoffs begin in March. Just below them are the OHL Power Houses Windsor Spitfires and Barrie Colts who are the tops in the Eastern and Western Conference as the Barrie Colts for the first time this year have leap froged the defending OHL & Memorial Cup Champion Spitfires and could be on a crash course for the OHL Championship in the spring.

With both teams having big leads in their respective conferences will make it tough for teams like the Mississauga St. Micheal's Majors and the Kitchener Rangers to catch up.

The top team out west is the Tri-City Americans who are widing their gap in the Western Hockey League and will be racing with teams like the Saskatoon Blades to catch the top spot and having home ice advantage throughout the entire playoffs in the Western Hockey League. Saskatoon and Victoriaville both jumped up a couple of spots as the main contenders for home ice advantage to challenge St. John and Tri-City in their respective leagues.

The Drummondville Voltigeurs have allowed the Tigers take the top spot in the QMJHL Central Division and that will most likely be the best Division Race in the QMJHL and could be the best in the entire major junior.

Other big division races to watch for is the Central Division in the WHL between Kootenay, Calgary and Medicine Hat. Also the Midwest Division in the OHL between the London Knights and the Kitchener Rangers which will most likely bee for the 2nd seed in the Western Conference.

At the tail end of the rankings is the Brandon Wheat Kings have jumped up from 10 to 9 while the London Knights contending for the Midwest Division Title has them up into the 10th and final spot in the rankings. 2 New Poll Questions about the Olympics and the Texas Stars

We got 2 new poll questions that I put up just today regarding the upcoming Vancouver Olympics and the Dallas Stars AHL Affiliate. First for the Olympics is regarding the 4 players that will be going to the 2010 Vancouver Olympics and which player will have the biggest impact for their national team as we are less then a month away from the start of the Olympic Opening Ceremonies as the Winter Games get underway on Feb. 12 while the Hockey Tournament begins on the 16.

Then for the Texas Stars poll question, they are in a very tight race for the West Division Top Seed and the question is simple? Do the Texas have what it takes to win the AHL West Division Title and gain home ice advantage for the 1st rounds of the playoffs when they start up in April.

I would like to see your responses to the questions as they will be up for the next couple of weeks.

The Texas Stars Question is on the side while the Olympic Question is on the bottom of the page.

Wichita Falls Wildcats fire John Bowkus

Back on Thursday night, the Wichita Falls Wildcats have fired head coach John Bowkus because of a disappointing season to this point. Coming off the near upset of the Topeka Roadrunners in last year's South Division Semifinals.

They was high hopes going into this season as that Wichita Falls was finally able to go up against the Topeka Roadrunners and the St. Louis Bandits for the South Division Title and a shot at this year's Robertson Cup Championship which will be in Wenatchee, Washington this season (Home of the Wenatchee Wild).

Team Owner Ray Davoult had no hard feelings for Bowkus who has been with the team 2004-05 season, he's been with the team since but it was felt like it was time for a chance and send the team in a new direction so the team can be more competitive and more successful in the post season and eventually get into the Robertson Cup Championship.

"John is a great friend and a great coach," said Wildcats owner Roy Davoult. "It was time for a change. I will support John in his future endeavors". He will be replaced by Mike Flanagan has a Robertson Cup Championship in his career when he was an assistant coach for the St. Louis Bandits and he was also the former head coach of the Kenai River Brown Bears.

Before coming into the North American Hockey League, He had experience with the Central States Hockey League (CSHL) which is one of 6 Jr. A Tier 3 leagues across the USA. He was the head coach of the Grand Rapids Owls for 5 seasons, and getting to the playoffs in 3 of those 5 years.

"Mike has some great coaching abilities and deserves a chance to become the future head coach of the Wildcats". said Davoult, he later went on to say "I've enjoyed working with John over the past 2 seasons, said Flanigan. "While it's under difficult circumstances, it's still a great opportunity".

The Wildcats plan to make him the interim head coach for the rest of the regular season and then will look for a permanent replacement over the off season depending on how the rest of the regular season goes and whatever or not the team makes the playoffs.

Going on to the weekend, the Wildcats were 10 points back of the Tornado and Jr. Blues who were tied for 3rd. For new head coach Mike Flanagan, it was a good start as the Wildcats sweeped the Tornado over the weekend with a 4-2 win where a 3 goal rally in the 3rd period helped them win.

While today's game just wrapped up with a 6-5 win today with a 3 goal 1st period to help them pull the gap within 6 points of both the Tornado and the Jr. Blues. However, the Texas Tornado have 4 games in hand against the Wildcats, so the Tornado will have a chance to pull away from the Wildcats in the last 2 months of the season.

Here's a look at the Wichita Falls Wildcats Schedule and Stats.

Major Junior Standings as of 1/24

Western Hockey League

Saskatoon may lead the East Division and the top spot in the Eastern Conference, but the Brandon Wheat Kings are beginning to make their move with after jumping Medicine Hat for 3rd and are just 2 points back of the Blades for the Division lead.

Currently, the Wheat Kings have earned points in 5 of their last 6 which included an impressive weekend with a 6-2 win over Prince Albert and a 5-2 win over Conference Leading Saskatoon last night. The Team's leading score Matt Calvert has had 7 points in the last 5 games with the help of 3 multi point games recently.

For the Blades, running into the Wheat Kings and a surging Kootenay Ice team have made things very hard recently to keep the Blades leading the East and the top spot in the Eastern Conference.

The Central is getting just as tight if not tighter with Calgary, Medicine Hat and Kootenay are all within 1 point of the Central Division Lead (CGY 64 PTS, MHT 64 PTS, KOT 63 PTS) as the Ice broke a team record with their 14 game winning streak before the Prince Albert Raiders ended it last night with a 5-2 win. With this winning streak, the Ice are in 5th place and will be in the mix to win the Central against the Heavily favored Calgary Hitmen and Medicine Hat Tigers when the season started.

Leading the way for the Ice is Bryce Slyvester who has 2 hat tricks against Saskatoon and Lethbridge and is now in the top 5 in total league scoring 66 points (27G 39A).

The gap from 6th to 10th is really tight, Moose Jaw has cooled off after a great start in September and October as the Warriors have fallen to 6th place with them tied with the Prince Albert Raiders with 55 points, Red Deer is just 1 point back with 54 while in 9th and just out of the playoff picture right now is the Swift Current Broncos with 51 points.

Moose Jaw will have to be road warriors to get back in the post season this year as they have a season long 7 game road trip that will include going to play all 5 U.S. Division Teams in the midst of what could be the defining moment of the Warriors Season.

After a 4 game home stand in late Feb. the Warriors will finish the regular season with 6 of their final 8 on the road including 2 trips to Brandon and 1 to Saskatoon who will most likely be playing for the East Division title. And a home & home weekend on the season's final weekend against the Swift Current Broncos which could be for one of the final playoff spots out east.

Tri-City was an impressive 6-7 on a 7 game home stand that just wrapped up which included a strong win over Portland and a 4-2 win over the B.C. Division Leading Vancouver Giants back on 1/22. The only blip was a 3-2 win over the Spokane Chiefs.

Like Moose Jaw, Tri-City will be road warriors as well coming up with 6 of their next 8 coming up playing the likes of the Calgary Hitmen and the Vancouver Giants which could be a preview of a potential playoff series in the spring as the Giants and Americans are 1-2 in the Western Conference.

The gap between 3rd place Everett who have been on an 11 game winning streak that has taken the Silvertips to 3rd place in the West after the Tips finished 7th last season. For Portland, after leading the U.S. Division for nearly the entire first half have fallen off some what with a them losing 6 of their last 9 has them in 4th place and would be in an interesting playoff series against the 2008 WHL & Memorial Champion Spokane Chiefs who has the best team defense in the league by giving up just 118 goals as James Reid is 2nd overall in SV% with a .920 SV% and a strong 2.42 GAA which is also in the top 5 among all WHL Goalies.

With Seattle and Prince George drifting away from playoff contention, for Kelowna, Kamloops and Chilliwack. For these teams, it's not about who's in and who's out, it's positioning themselves up for the best seeding possible as the Chilliwack Bruins and Kamloops Blazers are fighting it out for 6th and 7th while the Rockets are in the 8th and final spot with 46 points. Unless Seattle can catch up to the Rockets, they will find themselves along with the Cougars out of the Western Conference Playoffs this season.

Ontario Hockey League

In both the East and West this year in the OHL, the bottom of both Conference is where most of the drama is going to take place. In the East, Barrie has a 10 point lead over the Mississauga St. Micheal's Majors who are in 3rd due to both teams being in the Central Division. After Ottawa is leading the East.

The gap between the Peterborough Petes and the Kingston Fronteacs are just 3 points which if the playoffs began right now, the Frontenacs and Petes would play each other in the 4-5 matchup. Just below them is the gap from 6th to 8th between the Sudbury Wolves, Oshawa Generals and Brampton Battalion are just separated by 3 points and could easily move up with a late season run. Unfortunately, neither team is in a positron to at least pull away from this gap to improve their playoff position and I would expect it to be very tight.

As for the last 2 teams in the East in Niagara and Belleville, it's going to be a very tough final part of the season as the Bulls and Icedogs as both teams are struggling and they haven't had the ability to put something together and I would expect these teams to be fighting to stay out of the cellar. If either team is going to have a chance, they need to start beating Sudbury, Oshawa and Brampton every chance they can get because neither one of these 3 teams can have the ability to pull away to at least better secure a playoff spot.

The best race will be for the Midwest Division as the Kitchener Rangers and London Knights will be back and fourth for the Central Division Title and the 2nd seed in the playoffs. With Windsor having a 10 point cushion on both teams, this will be the main race to follow in the Western Conference as a couple of head to head matchups will go a long way towards who will win the Division.

The next game between the Rangers and the Knights will be this Tuesday as the Knights won the last meeting back on 1/21 with a 3-2 win where Jared Knight had a huge game that day, then the final matchup of the regular season will take place on March 4.

Plymouth is looking to at least solidify a 4th place spot and 1st round home ice as the Whalers have been on of the best runs of late in the OHL with winning 5 of their last 6 including a strong road win over the Mississauga St. Micheal's Majors, perhaps the biggest win of the season against Windsor back on 1/18 and a 3-2 win against Kitchener which could be a possible 1st round matchup if the Rangers don't win the Midwest Division.

Also an easy schedule should benefit with the likes of Owen Sound, Brampton and Guelph coming up that should hold down the 4th spot and possibly catchup with the Kitchener Rangers and London Knights.

The race from 5th to 8th will be very tight as the Sault St. Marie Greyhounds sit in 5th place with 52 points Owen Sound, Erie and Saginaw are just 1 point back from each other (OS 50 Points, SAG 49 Points, ERE 49 Points) and will look to at least get away from the Western Conference Basement as Guelph is 9 points back and will need to play lights out while it looks like Sarnia is looking for the future with a league worst 14 wins and just 31 points, which the Sting are 18 points out of a playoff spot.

Quebec Major Junior Hockey League

St. John has finally been rewarded with the #1 spot in the Major Junior Rankings as the Seadogs are approaching 40 wins and having an 11 point lead over the Moncton Wildcats who themselves have the 2nd best record in the league right now.

Other then the big lead in the Atlantic, we will have a great battle between the Victoriaville Tigers and Drummondville Voltigeurs will have the best race for the Central Division Title and a automatic top 4 seed for the 2nd round assuming both teams get out of the Divisional Round. Recently the Voltigeurs has had they way in a recent string against Atlantic Division Teams as they won 3 of 4 recently with a pair of wins against P.E.I and a dominating win over the Acadie-Bathurst Titans before a surprising loss to the Halifax Mooseheads.

Victoriaville has looked more impressive of the 2 right now with an offensive explsion recently which have included 2 games with 7 wins where they have scored 5 or more goals in the game with Phillip-Micheal Davos who has 11 goals in the last dozen games. Included in their was a 4 goal game against Acadie-Bathurst back on 1/6.

Quebec City (East) and Rouyn-Nornda (West) have gone out to big division leads as the Ramparts and Huskies will look to win the Division with both teams having strong goaltending duos with strong defenses and could be a pontentital surprise teams for the rest of the regular season and in the playoffs.

Only the bottom 2 teams in the entire QMJHL miss the playoffs. Right now, the Halifax Mooseheads have been in the league basement this year with 10 wins. This is a big deal after winning just 2 in the first 25 games of the season where the Mooseheads are expected to miss the playoffs.

As for other teams that could miss, out on the playoffs include the Baie-Comeau Drakkar would be the other team sent home early as they have a 15-30-3 record with just 33 points. Other teams that could be in danger include the Lewiston Maineiacs with 36 points and the Acadie-Bathurst Titans and Val-dor Fourues who both have 41 points as we near the 50 game mark of the season.

Starting Today, with the Major Juniors reaching the 50 game mark of the season. I'm going to start showing the different playoff spots.
