Ontario Hockey League Conference Semifinals

For the most part the Ontario Hockey League went as scripted as the OHL Conference Quarterfinals say 6 of the 8 first round series wrap up in 5 games in less. Both of the top teams in the Windsor Spitfires & Barrie Colts swept the Erie Otters while the Barrie Colts just thrashed the Sudbury Wolves by scoring 6 or more goals in 3 of the 4 games, including a 11-4 win on the opening night.

Overall, just 2 series were had any kind of drama as the Kingston Frontenacs and Brampton Battalion where just 2 of the games were won by the home team. Kitchener took down the Saginaw Spirit in 6 games as we had a number of close games as Kitchener won just over a minute into the extra period.

Overall, just one game had any kind of blowout as the Rangers beat the Spirit 4-1 back on Game 4. Kitchener will run into their Midwest Divisional Rivalries London Knights as London & Kitchener have been neck-and-neck several times in recent years for the Midwest Division Title in recent years.

The other series that should be coming in with much interest is the #2 VS. #3 Series in the East as the Mississauga St. Micheal's Majors and the Ottawa 67s in the Eastern Conference.

All 4 of the Series' will get underway on Thursday Night. All the Best of 7 Series' will be back and fourth except for the Ottawa VS. Mississauga Series.

Here's a look at the Schedules for the Conference Semifinals.

Mudbugs Put the Eagles on Brink of Elinmation

From the Central Hockey League: www.centralhockeyleague.com

Travis Clayton and Shawn Limpright each finished with a goal and an assist as the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs defeated the Colorado Eagles 3-1 to take a 3-0 series lead in the Northern Conference Semifinals Tuesday at the Century Tel Center. The Mudbugs will now have a chance to sweep the series on Thursday night in Game 4 and advance to the Northern Conference Finals.

Ken Carroll stopped 24 of 25 shots as the Bugs shut out Colorado until the final minute of regulation of all Eagles five power plays along the way. Dave Pszenyczny also scored for the 3rd consecutive game to help the Bossier-Shreveport built its first 3-0 series lead since the 2001 post-season.

Both teams had a few near-misses in a back-and-fourth first period in which the Mudbugs held a 9-6 shot advantage. On a late Power-Play Opportunity, Jamie Milam's point shot was deflected on its way through and Limpright knocked in the loose puck on the doorstep to give the Mudbugs a 1-0 advantage with just 22 seconds left in the first period.

Early in the 2nd frame, Clayton redirected a long wrist shot by Chirs St. Croix, sending it past Colorado netminder Mike Mole to make it a 2-0 Mudbugs lead. Pszenyczny extended the lead to 3-0 at 11:38, joining a rush as he exited the penalty box and getting a pass from Clayton before beating Mole on the stick side. The Bugs also killed Three Eagles powerplays in the middle period to take a three-goal lead into the locker room.

Colorado out shot Bossier-Shreveport 8-2 in the third period, but couldn't find the back of the net until Riley Nelson scored with 57 seconds left to break up Carroll's shootout bid and provide the final 3-1 margin.

Carroll is now 30-21 in his playoff career after his second win of the series, while Mike Mole made 17 saves and took the loss in his first action of these playoffs. Bossier-Shreveport converted 1 of 5 power plays chances while being out-shot 25-20 for the game.

The series now continue Thursday night with Game 4 as the Mudbugs try to complete the four-game sweep and advance to the third round of the CHL playoffs. Opening faceoff is set at 7:05 PM presented by Willis-Knighton Sports Medicine.

American Superstars Take a 2-1 Series Lead

From the Central Hockey League: www.centralhockeyleague.com

The Allen Americans dominated the Laredo Bucks 4-1 on the road to take a 2-1 series lead in the Conference Semifinals. The lead is the first series lead in the team history for the expansion club.

For the first time in the series, Allen kept Laredo off the scoreboard in the opening period. The Americans scored two goals in an 11-shot frame for both teams. 2010 CHL All-Star Starter Justin Bowers redirected a shot to give Allen the first goal of the game at 7:17. Four minutes later Ryan Fairbarn gave the Americans a two goal cushion.

Laredo cut Allen's lead in half 6:53 into the 2nd period. Forward Todd Griffith scored on a backhander to make it 2-1. The heat between the clubs continued to escalate until Allen agitator Mike Salekin and Griffith dropped the gloves immediately after a faceoff four minutes later. Salekin landed five quick right punches before sitting in the sin bin. Any momentum the Bucks got in the middle frame was squashed when Captain Jarret Lukin found Erik Adams rushing to the net. Adams beat Laredo backstop Pier-Olivier Pelletier for his 19th career playoff point.

Allen started the third with a 3-1 lead and did not give Laredo any opportunities. The Americans limited the Bucks to three shots in the final period. With 32.8 seconds remaining in the game, Justin Bowers sealed the deal with an empty-net goal. The final score was 4-1.

The Allen Penalty Killing unit continued to shutout the Bucks, killing off all four Laredo Power Plays Tonight. Chris Whitley made 24 saves, while Pelletier made 29 stopped 29 pucks.

NAHL Divisional Semifinals: South & West Division

Yesterday, I showed you the info for the Series' Schedule and info for the North & Central Division Semifinals. Now, here's a look at the South & West Division Semifinals.

Unless something crazy happens, we could have the makings of a huge South Division Championship between the Topeka Roadrunners & St. Louis Bandits for a Robertson Cup Tournament Spot in Washington.

In the West Division assuming that the Wenatchee Wild pushes aside the Kenai River Brown Bears. The other West Division Semifinal between the Fairbanks Ice Dogs & the Alaska Avalanche should be for a Robertson Cup Title Spot to represent the West Division.

Allen uses physical a game to win first ever Playoff Game & Tie Series

From the Allen Americans Website: www.allenamericans.com

The Allen Americans played a physical game to beat Laredo 3-2 and earn their first franchise playoff win. The Conference Semifinals series of the 2010 Ray Miron President's Cup Playoffs is tied at 1-1.

Laredo jumped out to an early lead after Todd Griffith backhanded a shot into the cage less then three minutes into the game. The Americans had the score tied up at 10:10, but the referee waived off the goal due to an interference penalty by Allen's Captain, Jerry Lukin. The Americans fought off 4 Laredo Power Plays in the 1st period and Allen had the extra-man advantage twice. There were 16 combined penalty minutes in the opening frame, which is the same amount that was called in last night's contest. Allen went into the first intermission 1-0.

The Americans came out strong in the 2nd period, scoring three straight goals to take a 3-1 lead. Just 1:16 into the frame, Colton Yellow Horn made the Bucks pay after they could not clear the traffic in front of the net. Yellow Horn's tally was the first career playoff goal. Then, forward Nino Musitelli skated into the Bucks zone and went top shelf to give Allen's its first lead of the night four minutes later. The goal was Musitelli's first career playoff goal as well. With 7:38 remaining in the middle frame, Musiteelli's first career playoff goal as well. With 7:38 remaining in the middle frame, Musitelli's poked a rebound around Buck Pier-Olivier's pad on the power play to gave Allen a two goal cushion.

Laredo staged a comeback in the third but could not find the firepower to get past Chris Whitley more then once. Ryan Lehr brought Laredo within one at 5:48. The Bucks put on the extra attacker with 1:12 remaining in the game as the crowd rose to their feet cheering them on its home team. The final score was 3-2.

Whitley recorded his first career playoff win, stopping 30 shots this evening. Pelletier made 21 shots. The teams combined for 64 career penalty minutes in the game, and Allen stopped all nine Laredo Power Plays.

Allen Continues its best-of-7 series in Laredo on March 30, April 1 and April 3. If the series is forced to six games, Allen will host Laredo April 6 at 7:30 PM.

Brahmas win Back & Fourth Affair in OT, Take 2-0 Series Lead

From the Central Hockey League Website: www.centralhockeyleague.com

It may be another playoff season but some things never change as last year's championship hero's for the Texas Brahmas, Brett Jeager and Tyler Skworchinski, are at it again the Brahmas to a 3-2 OT Victory in Odessa on Saturday Night giving the defending champions a 2-0 lead in their best of 7 series. The Series' shifts back to Texas for Games 3 and 4 on Wednesday & Friday Nights respectively.

Skworchinski had an unbelievable post-season a year ago scoring 13 times including 5 game winners and this season is taking the same shape if not one that is more impressive. On Saturday night, Skworchinski scored a pair of goals including the game winner in OT with less then 10 seconds remaining in the extra session. He now has four goals in his last three games this season.

Jeager made 46 saves in the game winning his fourth straight decision in this year's playoffs and seventh straight dating back to last year's Ray Miron President's Cup Championship Season. The Brahmas never trailed in Game Two as Lee Jubinville scored less then two minutes into the first period giving Texas a 1-0 lead. Odessa battled back with Sebastien Thinel scoring just under 10 minutes into the first making it 1-1.

In the 2nd period, Skworchinski scored a power play goal making it 2-1 Texas which is where it stayed until the third period where Kory Karlander tied the game early in the final frame. In the OT, the Jacks had two power play chances taking the league's best man advantage during the regular season and having a chance to tie the series but Jeager made several key saves.

Joel Martin finished with 27 saves but takes the loss as he was also awesome throughout most of the game but with less then 10 seconds remaining in the first OT a puck got away from him and was directed in by a crashing Skworchinski.

The Jacks lose back-to-back home games for the first time since late November and for just the second time this season.

Road to the 2010 Memorial Cup: Quarterfinal Series'

Here's a look at the Western Hockey League, Ontario Hockey League & Quebec Major Junior Hockey League's as we are getting to start of the 2nd round of the Major Junior Playoffs. Be sure to look look for the Series Schedules as the 1st Round will be coming to an end this week.

Of the remaining 1st Round Series, Spokane & Portland have played a crazy series where home ice advantage hasn't meant anything where the road team has won every game in this series. The Winner of tonight's game 7 will play the Vancouver Giants in the Western Conference Semifinals.

The other 3 series are now set as the Calgary Hitmen VS. Medicine Hat Tigers, the Brandon Wheat Kings are playing the Saskatoon Blades out in the East. The other Western Conference Semifinals will be between the Tri-City Americans will take on the Kelowna Rockets who upset the Everett Silvertips in the Conference 1st Round.

For the most part the Ontario Hockey League has gone according to plan in the opening round as the higher seeded team has won every series in the opening round. As expected, Barrie & Windsor clinched sweeps while 3 other teams advanced in 5 games.

The only series going the distance is the #4 VS. #5 in the East the Kingston Frontenacs & Brampton Battalion will play Game 7 tonight with the winner playing the Barrie Colts with the series starting on Thursday night.

Quebec has had some great series as only the Drummondville Voltigeurs were able to pull off the first round sweep as they awaiting the final 2 Series to wrap up tonight. One of the big surprises could be the Chicoutimi Sagueneens as the Sagueneens ended the regular season on a very sour note who's looking to knock out the Rimouski Oceanic.

The West Division was also very competitive as the Val-dor Fourers took West Division Champions Rouyn-Nornda to 6 games, while Montreal & Gatineau will settle things tonight.

2 of the 4 QMJHL Quarterfinals are now set as the #3 Quebec City Ramparts will take on #6 Victoriaville while the Moncton Wildcats will take on the West Division Champions Rouyn-Nornda Huskies which should get underway later this week.

OT Goal by Joe Blaznek cap Game 1 Comeback

From the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs Website: www.mudbugshockey.com

Joe Blaznek scored just 42 seconds into OT to complete the a furious rally and lift the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs to a 4-3 victory over the Colorado Eagles in Game 1 of the Northern Conference Semifinals Friday Night at the Budweiser Events Center. The Mudbugs hold a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven series after winning game 1 for the first time in the last 8 playoff series.

Bossier-Shreveport trailed 3-0 entering the third period, but scored three times in a span of just 3 minutes to tie it up and force the OT Session. Blaznek then ended the game in the first minute of the extra session to give the Bugs 1-0 playoff series for the first time since the 2006 their opening series in the 2006 playoffs.

The Mudbugs got off to a great start in the opening period, out-shooting the Eagles 14-6 and generating a few good scoring chances. Colorado did take a 1-0 lead into the locker room though as Jim Jackson's long shot from the wing bounced off John Decarlo's arm and then off the post before finding the net at 2:14 of the first period.

The 2nd period brought more of the same with Bossie-Shreveport skating to a 12-9 shot advantage but still unable to solve Andrew Penner. The Eagles scored twice more in the 2nd period, going up 2-0 when Decarlo stopped Riley Nelson shot from the left circle only to see the rebound bounce off a skate and into the net at 5:34. Later in the period when Ed Mcgrane broke down the left wing and fired a shot into the top corner to extend the lead to 3-0 for Colorado after 40 minutes.

The Bugs then stormed back in the third starting when Adam Hogg was whistled on a four-minute double minor for high sticking. Shawn Limpright started the scoring at 8:10, redirecting a Jeff Kyrzakos shot past Penner to get the Mudbugs on the board. On the 2nd half of the double-minor, Tyrel Lucas got a pass from Chris St. Croix and beat Penner from the bottom of the circle to make it 3-2.

With Colorado on the Power Play just over a minute later, Brett Smith created a shorthanded 2 on 1 break and found David Pszenyczny, who buried the game-tying goal at 11:11. Decarlo made a number of big saves in the third preserve the tie and force OT.

Laredo D-Men spark 3rd period comeback against the Americans

From the Central Hockey League Website: www.centralhockeyleague.com

The Laredo Bucks beat the Allen Americans 4-3 Friday night in one of the Central Hockey League's Southern Conference Semifinals at the Allen Event Center. The Bucks lead the best of 7 series' one to nothing with game two on Saturday Night.

Laredo trailed 3-2 entering the third period but struck twice in the final frame to improve to 15-4 all-time in game one of a playoff series. Pier Pelletier stopped 33 of 36 shots he faced including all in the third period as he won his pro playoff debut. Going back to the regular season Pelletier is 10-0-2 in his last 12 games.

Neil Trimm gave Laredo a 4-3 lead with 10:50 left in the game when he scored on a slap shot from the top of the slot to pick up his first career CHL Playoff Goal.

Mike Looby scored his 2nd goal of the night just 2:46 into the third period to tie the contest at 3-3. Looby entered Friday's game with just one career CHL Playoff Goal. The Americans had an empty net for the final 1:09 of the game but could not tie it as Pelletier made several key stops to hang on for the win. Allen was 28-1 after two periods during the regular season.

Laredo would battle back and take a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes of play. Looby tied the game at 1-1 at the 9:32 mark of the first when he scored from the top of the right circle off of an Allen Turnover. The strike was Looby's second career CHL Playoff Goal.

The Bucks took a 2-1 lead with just 42.5 seconds left in the first period. Jarred Mohr picked up a loose puck in Allen's zone and found a wide-open Darryl Smith in front of the net who scored on a backhander. The Goal was Smith's sixth career CHL Playoff Goal.

Laredo was out shot 11-10 in the 1st period. Allen would strike twice in a span of one minute to take a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes.

Tobias Whelan tied the game at 2-2 at the 5:31 mark of the 2nd period on a broken power play in the Bucks Defensive zone. Just one minute later Eric Adams put the Americans up 3-2 when he jammed in a rebound into the back of the net after a breakaway attempt by Bryce Graham.

The Bucks out shot the Americans 13-9 in the 2nd period but were out shot in the game 36-32. Chris Whitley suffered the loss for Allen as he set aside 28 of 31 shots he faced. Jeff Bes picked up an assist in the game to score his 100th career CHL Point.

Brahmas explode for 5 in 3rd period, Take Series Opener

From the Central Hockey League: www.centralhockeyleague.com

It was more then a just a game one semifinals game Friday Evening as memories continued to linger over last season's tough series between the teams in which the Brahmas took Game 7 with a decisive 8-1 victory to advance and ulitmately win the team's first league championship. Odessa, seeking a sense of redemption, put the first tally on the board with the lethal powerplay when Alex Dunn skated in and drilled a shot passed Brett Jeager in the 1st period. The tally would be the sole score in the 1st 2 periods.

In a matter of 1:17 into the 3rd period the Brahmas tied the game at 1-1 and then took the lead beginning when James Hiebert set the table for Matt Pierece who was planted in front of Joel Martin's goal crease for his 2nd of the post-season. Forward Lee Jubinville followed the goal when he took a feed from Jordan Cameron, beating Martin who apperared to not see the shot.

At the 5:00 mark a shot from Justin Kinnunen on the powerplay bounced off Jack Garrett Gruenke deflected in for a Texas two goal lead. The Brahmas continued to stay hot and this time rookie blueliner Tyrell Mason converted for his first goal of the playoffs as he skated in from the left point and rifled a shot to the back of the net.

Life cameback to Odessa near the midway marker in the final period when Mike Lesperance from the top of the left circle drilled a shot to put the Jacks within two. But just as the crowd began to get involved, Texas A.J. Gale came in all alone and with a wrister beat Martin for the Brahmas fifth goal in the 3rd period. Brett Jeager stopped 29 saves for the victory in the net and his third straight in the playoffs.

Game two of the Best of 7 series is tomorrow night in Odessa with a 7:05 PM Start Time.

3/26 Scoreboard & Playoff Series Update

Here's a look at the scoreboard from last night as we had a light night in the NHL. In the AHL, the Worcester Sharks become the 4th team to clinch a Calder Cup Playoff spot while others like Texas as they starting to get closer to clinching playoff births of their own. For the Texas Stars, they also looking to get 1st Round Home Ice by holding off teams like the Milwaukee Admirals and the Rockford Icehogs in the West Division.

The Opening night of the Central Hockey League Conference Semifinals with the Road Teams taking the opening games with all 3 teams using third period comebacks. Most impressievly was the Texas Brahmas by scoring 5 goals in the 3rd period after being able to stay in the game in Odessa. Also Laredo were able to get a pair of goals to comeback in Allen. Look for CHL Game Summaries of the Texas Brahmas VS. Odessa Jackalopes & Laredo Bucks VS. Allen Americans Games in the Game Summaries.

More Teams clinched 2nd Round Spots in the Major Junior Playoffs. Teams like St. John, Plymouth & Quebec City are moving on the 2nd Round. One of the big shocks came in the WHL as the Chilliwack Bruins winning in Washington State and avoiding elinmation for at least one game.

The NCAA Tournament got underway last night with the University of Denver going down in the opening round. While a great game between St. Cloud State & Northern Michigan going to Double OT.

In the U.S.A. Juniors, the Waterloo Blackhawks clinched the 4th & final spot in the USHL East Division while the Sioux City Musketeers overtook the Tri-City Storm with just 3 games left in the season.

The NAHL is looking forward as the North Division will comedown to the Final Weekend between the Traverse City North Stars & the Marquette Rangers as both teams are still tied.
