The Opening night of the Stanley Cup Playoffs saw road rules as 3 of the 4 lower seeded opened the Stanley Cup Playoffs with wins as Ottawa, Philadelphia & Colorado all pulled off some big shocks to open the playoffs last night.
In San Jose, is this a case of deja vu as the Sharks open yet another playoff series with a loss and with their recent playoff history, this could spell trouble for the Western Conference Top Seed & Pacific Division Champions. The Last 2 years have seen major playoff disappointment's as lower seeded teams like the Dallas Stars and Anaheim Ducks way to early in the playoffs.
Out East is where the Ottawa Senators pulled off an opening night shock against the defending Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins where 3 unanswered goals late in the 1st & 2nd put the Sens up 3-1. Despite 2 power play goals from Evgeni Malikin, it wasn't enough as a 17 save effort from Brian Elliott ended any chances of a Pittsburgh comeback.
The only home team to win last night was the Phoenix Coyotes who are back in the playoffs since 2002. Despite all the rumors from ownership problems to possible relocation, they looking to prove that the Coyotes are back and can knockout the Mighty Red Wings. This was the Coyotes first playoff win since April of 2002 against the San Jose Sharks.
In the race for the Calder Cup, it was all close games as all 4 games were one goal games. A near upset was pulled off in Hershey, PA as the Bridgeport Sound Tigers went into the 2nd intermission up 3-1 over the Bears but late goals by Francois Bouchard & Mathieu Perrault scored late in the game to force OT where Andrew Joudrey scored just 4 minutes into the extra frame to grab victory in the opening game. The only road win came as the Lowell Devils who despite getting out-shot 36-24 pulled off a 3-2 win against the Atlantic Division Champion Worcester Sharks.
In Juniors, the Barrie Colts are looking to finally end the Mississauga with a 3-0 win in Game 1 of the OHL Eastern Conference Final as a pair of goals from Matt Kennedy gave them the win. As for the Indiana Ice, a 3 game comeback helped the Ice win the series in 5 games 3-2 with an unassisted goal from Anthony Bitetto that ended the Roughriders season. And helped the Ice advance to the East Division Final where they will play the Top Seeded Green Bay Gamblers.
