As the season is slowly starting to get into focus for the North American Hockey League, the Wichita Falls Wildcats have cut down the list of 74 players down to 30 as the season gets underway in Mid September. The 25 Players that make the team will make their way to Blane, Minnesota for the NAHL Blane Showcase from September 15-18.
After starting the Showcase against the Chicago Hitmen, The Wildcats will play the Wenatchee Wild, the defending Robertson Cup Champion Bismarck Bobcats and the Aberdeen Wings at the Blane Showcase to help open up the season. After the Showcase wraps up, the team's home opening weekend will take place on September 24 & 25 with games against the Fairbanks Ice Dogs and the Amarillo Bulls who are also making their Junior Debuts this season.
Of the 30 players on the prelim roster, 8 players are back looking to return including Mac Olson who's looking to improve after an injury that kept him to playing just 16 games. Also Ryan Frost will be entering his final year of Junior Eligibility hoping to get some College Interest after ending the season by scoring a point in 10 of the final 13 games including a 7 game point scoring streak near the end of the season.
One Southwest connection is Teemu Tiitinen who's a Fin who played for the Dallas Stars AAA Team who was 2nd in Goal Scoring with 22 and 3rd overall with 38 points in 48 games played last season. Not bad when the top 2 point getters in Mcminimy and Tyler Hope are also getting looked at in the USHL & NAHL as well.
After having 6 goalies drees up for at least one game, this is the area of the team needs to focus on the most as after Mike Flanagan took over the team in January. This was one of the big reasons why the Wildcats failed to make the playoffs.
The only goaile with junior Experience last year was Brian Jones who was the starter for the Wheatfield Blades of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League (GOJHL), which is a Jr. B League in Southern Ontario. Jones played in 28 games as he got traded from St. Catharines in late October. He played 24 of his 28 games for the Blades on a team who finished 2nd to last in the Golden Horseshoe Division and lost to Stoney Creek in a 4 game sweep in the opening round.
However, Tyler Green did win a U18 Tier 1 Championship with the Belle Tire Team that's in the Detroit Area and Brian Jones who played for the Chicago Missions who finished 3rd overall last season. So they will be an interesting goaltender battle for the two spots this upcoming season.
