Corpus Christi Icerays to bring 28 Players to Training Camp

With the start of the NAHL Season coming up in a little over 3 weeks, the Corpus Christi Icerays have named their Training Camp Roster where 28 players will fight it out over the next few weeks to make the final 23 man roster which will be mandatory by the beginning of October.

Corpus Christi will start the season like most of the rest of the league at the NAHL Blaine Showcase on September 15 against the Traverse City North Stars, in addition to the North Stars, the Icerays will also play the Chicago Hitmen, Owatonna Express & Dawson Creek Rage throughout the Showcase Week.

After the Icerays come back to Texas from the Twin Cities, it's a 3 game roadtrip the next weekend with a pair of games against the New Mexico Mustangs in Albuquerque, then one game against the Amarillo Bulls on September 26 before the team's home opener on October 1 on the Wichita Falls Wildcats.

Of the 28 players, 27 of them are US Born with the only foreigner is goaltending hopeful Marco Weiser who's from Austria.

The Corpus Christi Icerays home-venue training camp opens at the American Bank Center in the first week of September, and 28 players have been invited to attend, Icerays GM Pat Dunn announced on Friday. The Icerays can still add to their list of invitees, by NAHL Rules mandate the Icerays roster can be no larger then 25 players by opening day on September 15, and no more then 23 players by October 1. The Icerays 28 players training camp list currently consists of 16 forwards, 9 defensemen, and 3 goalies. The Group includes 27 American Born Players, hailing from 12 different states, and one European Born Goaltender, Marco Wieser, who is from Austria. Four of the invited players are from Texas. They are goaltender Taylor Heifetz (Coppell), defensemen Kyle Hughes (Round Rock), and forwards Alex Rosado (Cypress) and Derrek Schartz (Plano).

The state which is rep. by the most players is Michigan with five players. The oldest player is Ryan Gaffney, who will turn 21 on January 2nd. Gaffney edges out Josh Munford by two days for that honor. The youngest player is Las Vegas native Cody Milligan will turn 17 on September 7. Munford is one of three players measures in at 6'4", tying for the tallest on the team. He is also the heaviest at 228 LBS. 21 of the 28 players stand six feet or taller, exhibiting that size and toughness will not be lacking in the new look Icerays.

Ten of the 28 players played in the NAHL last season, including six for the Alpena Ice Diggers - the franchise that was moved to Corpus Christi. Three of the Icerays Players drafted earlier this summer made it through the South Texas Camp. They are Alex Rosado (4th Round), Alex Parizedk (7th Round), and Daniel Swank (10th Round). The additional 15 players were recruited as free agents by Head Coach, Brent Hughes, and assistant coach, Justin Quenneville. The current Icerays Training Camp List is provided below.
