3/9 D/FW Playoffs Game Summaries

Here's a quick look at how the opening night of HS Hockey Playoff Action from the D/FW Area last night across the D/FW Area.

Gold Tier Quarterfinals Game 1

It was mostly one sided affairs last night as 3 of the games saw some blowouts as basically all the higher seeds won pretty easily last night.

#8 Frisco ISD 1 #1 Southlake Carroll 8 (3-1, 4-0, 1-0)

Southlake Carroll Leads Series 1-0, Game 2 is at Farmers Branch at 6:30 PM

Game Summary: www.pointstreak.com/players/players-boxscore.html?gameid=1239178

For Southlake Carroll, it was pretty much over by the 2nd intermission as the Dragons were leading 7-1 at the 2nd intermission. It was the work of Dragons leading scorers Marcel Toure lead the way with a hat trick and Connor Morrow with 2 goals, got the game going by scoring the opening goal just 13 seconds into the game. Later in the 1st period. It was Marcel Toure who scored his 2nd of the game while Drew Cossu scored just 26 seconds later to make it 3-0.

Dominic Girard who was the hero for Frisco ISD by putting the regular season finale against Jesuit last week, while he was easily the best player in the game by scoring the only goal. He was looking to keep Frisco ISD in the game, but it was another Southlake brigade as Conner Gildenblatt and Chris Mochulsky scored 50 seconds apart to put the Dragons up 5-1 early in the 2nd period.

That pretty much put the game away as Toure scored his 3rd while Connor Morrow scored late in the 2nd and early in the 3rd to put the game at 8-1 where the Dragons was eventually put away.

It was the goal brigades midway through the 1st and early in the 2nd period that shocked Frisco ISD and puts the top seeded Dragons in a great spot to advance to the Semifinals tomorrow night.

Andrew Campbell despite his best efforts stopped 25 of 33 shots and was shocked by getting scored on the PP 4 times in the game.

Southlake Carroll Goalie Will Talkington had a realitivy easy night by stopping 14 of 15 shots in the game.

#7 Dallas Jesuit 0 #2 Allen 5 (0-0, 0-2, 0-3)

Allen Leads Series 1-0, Game 2 is at the Farmers Branch Starcenter at 8:15 PM

Game Summary: www.pointstreak.com/players/players-boxscore.html?gameid=1239179

After a realitivy slow 1st half of the game, the Allen Eagles used goals by Collen Daniels and Chris Boswell late in the 2nd period to help the Eagles pull away from the Jesuit Rangers as Drew Baney helped keep the Rangers in the game for the first half of the season. In all, the 5 goals were scored by 5 different players as Daniels and Boswell scored late in the 2nd period.

Then in the 3rd period, the Eagles began to pull away Mike Allen and Alex Garrison scored just under a minute apart to go up 4-0 5 and a half minutes into the 3rd period.

Eagles Goalie Spencer Harris had a shutout by stopping all 32 shots as the Jesuit Rangers outshot the Allen Eagles 32-24 for the game, but couldn't get anything past Harris who had a solid 17-6-2 record and a 2.17 GAA that ranked 2nd behind Coppell's Derek Wilms during the regular season.

#6 Flower Mound 3 #3 Plano Senior 7 (0-3, 3-2, 2-0)

Plano Senior Leads Series 1-0, Game 2 is at the Plano Starcenter at 7:00 PM

Game Summary: www.pointstreak.com/players/players-boxscore.html?gameid=1239181

3 goals in just under 3 minutes plus 4 goals by Jake Thompson helped crushed the defending Champion Flower Mound Jaguars to cool down Flower Mound's strong 2nd half of the season that could end tomorrow night.

Goals by Matt Fulcoly, Will Collins and Billy Ranker are scored midway through the 1st period to put the Wildcats up 3-0 and keep Flower Mound at bay as the Jaguars outshot the Wildcats 42-28 for the game. After another goal by Jonathan Thompson that began his first of his 4 goals helped made it 4-0, the Jaguars got 2 back on Special Teams with goals by Sean O'Connor (SH) and Jake Newton (PP) to make it 4-2 and could have made it even closer if they were able to convert on a Holding Stick Penalty 5 and a half minutes into the game.

Unfortunaly for the Jaguars, the PP wasn't great and that helped gave the Wildcats a 5-2 lead with Thompson's 2nd goal of the game just 36 seconds after the Jags. made it 4-2. Plano Senior Goalie Cody Smith had to stop 39 of 42 shots to help support the Jonathan Thompson show in the 2nd and 3rd periods. With 6 minutes, Flower Mound's Leading Score Jake Newton who scored 17 goals during the regular season made it 5-3 to keep the Jaguars hopes of a comeback alive.

After Thompson scored the hat trick to make it 6-3 early in the 3rd period. The Jaguars got in penalty trouble as they suffered 5 straight penatlies which included a Roughing Minor by Sean O'Connor turned into an Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalty that caused a 10 minute miscoundt that got him thrown out of the game. After that, Jonathan Thompson scored his 4th to make it a 7-3 game.

If it weren't for the penalties, Flower Mound might have had a shot of at least getting this to OT after the fast start by the Wildcats. The Defending Champions find themselves just one loss away from getting elinmated and throwing away a fantasitic 2nd half of the season.

#5 Plano West 2 #4 Coppell 3 (SO) (0-2, 0-0, 2-0, 0-0, 0-1)

Coppell Leads Series 1-0, Game 2 is @ Plano Starcenter at 8:45 PM

Game Summary: www.pointstreak.com/players/players-boxscore.html?gameid=1239180

In what was easily the best game of the night. The Coppell Cowboys cooled off the Wolves winning ways as the Wolves ended the regular season by winning 4 straight. Coppell used 2 goals by Aaron Wright to use in a very tight back and fourth game. After Coppell made it 2-0, the Cowboys tried to sit on the lead to protect the lead as a realitivy clean game produced few chances on Special Teams through the 1st 2 periods.

Late in the 2nd period, Plano West started to pick up the pressure as a couple of close calls late in the 2nd period. The Wolves were able to head into the 3rd as Drew Gannon used a goal from a great pass from Timothy Holt to get into the game at 2-1 just 47 seconds into the 3rd period. Then midway through the 3rd period, Timothy Holt took things into his own hands after getting a pass from Will Baker to breakaway to score midway through the 3rd period to make it 2-2.

Then it got very physical late in the 3rd period and in the OT as both teams were looking to get the edge in the series. After the OT ended as the SOG were 36-33 in favor of Coppell to get to the SO. Then in the SO, Brandon Harley scored the only goal in the SO to give the Cowboys the 3-2 win and get the game 1 victory.

Silver Tier 1st Round

#12 Mansfield ISD 3 #5 Midlothian 4 (2-1, 1-2, 0-1)

Midlothain will advance to play #4 Rockwall in the Quarterfinals @ Richardson Ice Training Center on Thursday at 8:15 .

Game Summary: www.pointstreak.com/players/players-boxscore.html?gameid=1239224

It looked like it would have been an easy game, but Mansfield gave Midlothain the biggest scare of the night. It started just 4 minutes when Bradley Corcoran used an unassisted goal to go up 1-0. But just 36 seconds later, Midlothain Forward Matt Bassett to tie the game at 1-1. After the fast start, both teams took a more cautios approach until Tyler Hervey made it 2-1 with just over a minute left in the 1st period.

Midlothian was looking for more and they got it with Joseph Dancy with assists by Bassett and Jones just 3 minutes into the 2nd period to make it 3-1 and it was looking that Midlothian was looking to blow the doors off. Mansfield had enough when the #12 Seeded team pulled Aaron Peart and switched goalies and put Kevin Scheer.

In addidition, Mansfield took a more defenseive apparoch to contain the Panthers and looking to get back in the game. That stragety payed off midway through the game when Garrett Weitzel who scored just 2 goals all year scored a big goal to put confidence back in the Tigers bench to make it 3-2. With still half a game left to play, Mansfield was still looking to pull off the biggest upset of the night, and it looked like it was going to happen when Mike Mills tied the game in the final minute of the 2nd period to tie it at 3-3.

With Mansfield having all the momentum, Mansfield had Midlothain on the run. Midlothian put those fears to bed when Trent Newman made it 4-3 nearly 4 minutes into the 3rd period. After that, Goalie Jimmy Case shutout Mansfield in the 3rd period to win a close game and to advance to the Quarterfinals where they will get the #4 Seeded Rockwall Yellow Jackets tomorrow night.

#11 Arlington Martin 3 #6 Plano East 7 (1-0, 0-6, 1-2)

#6 Plano East will advance to the Quarterfinals against FM Marcus on Thrusday @ Plano Starcenter at 8:45 PM.

Game Summary: www.pointstreak.com/players/players-boxscore.html?gameid=1239225

A 6 goal 2nd period gave the Plano East Panthers a 7-3 win as Andrew Durham and Jason Cotton each scored twice. They were joined in the scoring brigrade by John Demuth and Matt Robinson to help out the scoring in the opening and final minutes of the 2nd period.

For the most part, it was Plano East's night in the 1st Round with the excption of Blane Key who was involved on all 3 goals with 2 goals and an assist in the game was the only things to get exicting for Arlington Martin. For the Martin Warriors who were the Silver Tier Runner Ups last year where they upset by Bishop Lynch Friars when the Bishop Lynch Goalie stopped 40 shots in that game.

In addiditoin to Jason Cotton's 2 goals in the 2nd period, he completed a hat trick in the final seconds of the game to make it 7-3.

Also the Panthers outshoot the Warriors 31-19 in the game.

#10 Southlake Carroll 1 #7 Richardson ISD 2 (SO) (1-0, 0-1, 0-0, 0-0, 0-1)

#7 Richardson ISD has advanced to the Quarterfinals to play #2 Keller ISD on Thursday @ Euless Starcenter at 7:00 PM.

Game Summary: www.pointstreak.com/players/players-boxscore.html?gameid=1239223

Despite getting outshoot 40-18 for the game, Southlake Carroll showed it's depth as the only team to have both their Gold and Silver Teams to make the playoffs this year. It was mostly a defenseive showdown as both teams didn't wanted to give up the first goal of the game.

Despite an early power play, Richardson ISD couldn't get much on goalie AJ Smith to keep it scoreless. Then 3 straight Richardson Penalties throughout the period gave Southlake chances and it finally paid off for the Dragons as Taylor Bedoff scored on an unassisted PP Goal with 2 minutes left to make it 1-0. Southlake was looking to fight off Richardson peppering Smith which eventually tied the game at 1-1 3 minutes into the 2nd period.

#9 Grapevine 5 #8 Denton County Spartans 4 (0-0, 2-2, 3-2)

Grapevine Advances to the Quarterfinals to play #1 Garland ISD on Thrusday @ Richardson Ice Training Center at 6:30 PM

Game Summary: www.pointstreak.com/players/players-boxscore.html?gameid=1239226

A great back and foruth game saw a scoreless game turned into a fast and furious game as it turned into a 2-1 game in favor of Grapevine as Jayson Fisher and Dalton Foster for the Mustangs with a Spartans goal by Brandon Smith in between in the 1st 5 and a half minutes of the 2nd period.

As the SOG and a ton of penalties, it had the makings for a very high scoring game took place in Farmers Branch as the Mustangs were looking to turn around what was a bad ending of the regular season as losses to both Southlake Carroll. And a win that was to close for comfort against Colleyville Heritage, the Mustangs were up 2-1 until Spartans Forward Brady Ferguson who had a great year by scoring 16 goals during the regular season to make it 2-2.

Late in the 2nd and early in the 3rd period, things were not looking good for Denton County as Grapevine's Quinn Hardtke scored on the PP from Michael James and Jayson Fisher who scored his 2nd point of the night.

Then just seconds later, another penalty by Danny Schmidt put the Spartans in trouble again. This time though, Denton County was able to kill off the penalty and Patrick Thane who had 2 penalties in the game already, made up for the penalites with a goal just 30 seconds after killing off the penalty to make it 3-3 early in the 3rd.

Then just 3 minutes later on the PP, Brandon Smith gave Denton County the first lead of the night by going up 4-3 on a great pass and one timer by Brady Ferguson

time before AJ Smith would break and would give Richardson ISD the lead. But Smith kept the Dragons tied the game as the Southlake offense lead by players like Ryan Rogers and Matthew Shrout looking to get the Dragons the lead. But neither side could buge as the sides went to a SO.

With 5 minutes left, Grapevine was still very much in the game with a 4-3 lead for Denton County when Alex Rife and Dalton Foster who scored his 2nd of the night just 21 seconds apart to give Grapevine a 5-4 lead and it would eventually be the game winner.

Both teams were looking to get one last shot as Denton County pulled goalie Dylan Gumbert for one last shot, but it wasn't to be as the Mustangs advanced to the Quarterfinals in a wild affair between the Central Division Rivals.

It was expected to be a great game as the Denton County Spartans won all 3 games during the regular season, including one of the best games of the season when the two teams played in one of the best games of the season as Denton County won 12-11 back in early December.
