2/14 Canadian Hockey League Scoreboard

Here's a look at the Scoreboard & Reviews from last night's Action in the Western Hockey League which included Coppell Native Colin Jacobs scoring the 1st Shootout Goal that helped be a big game changer as the Thunderbirds got a critical win over the Kelowna Rockets to get away from the Chasing Pack for the Final 2 Spots in the WHL Western Conference Race as they continue to battle teams like the Everett Silvertips & Prince George Cougars over the final month and change of the regular season.

Other WHL action included a possible WHL Championship Preview between the Kamloops Blazers & Edmonton Oil Kings where the Blazers were able to comeback from a 2-0 deficit at the 2nd intermission, into a 3-2 victory in the 3rd.

The Big difference maker saw the Blazers transforming the game from a 2-0 hole to a 2-2 tie with goals by Brandon Herrod & Austin Maddisky in just under 2 minutes to turn a 2-0 hole to a 2-2 tie early in the 3rd. With just a minute left in the game, Blazers Center Matt Needham scored the game winner in a battle of WHL Conference Leaders. This game was huge in the fact that the Blazers are 5 points ahead in the race for WHL Home Ice Advantage with both teams having just 15 games left in the regular season.

Elsewhere the Brandon Wheat Kings took down Kootenay 4-3 and the Western Conference Leading Tri-City Americans lost in a Shutout to the Vancouver Giants 5-4. In the lone QMJHL Game last night saw the Quebec City Remparts just crushed the Baie-Comeau Drakkar 9-1 thanks to a 5 point night from Frederick Roy.

In the NCAA, The Atlantic Hockey Association, Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) & ECAC Hockey Conferences will wrap up on February 25, and the Hockey East & Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) Seasons will wrap up on March 3. 9/12 Scoreboard

They were no games in the BCHL on Saturday, but some action in QMJHL, AJHL & one game in the NAHL as the league's 26 teams head to Blaine, Minnesota for the NAHL Blaine Showcase that begins on Wednesday Morning. Also making their debut are the main leagues are the largest of the Canadian Jr. A Leagues in the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL) and the Canadian Tier 1 Hockey League (CJAHL) which reps. Eastern Ontario in the Atlantic Region which is paired up with the Quebec Jr. A Hockey League and the Maritime Hockey League.

For the Canadian Jr. A Leagues, I'm going to take turns putting boxscores on those leagues about every week. This week Ontario Junior Hockey League, Canadian Tier 1 Hockey League and the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) when they season starts this Friday.

I will provide Boxscores and game summaries where they provide them. If their is a game with both teams being Southwest based, I will provide the home team's Game Summary regardless of the result.

Dallas Stars Games will have priority where things like the 3 Stars of the Game, thoughts on the game and reaction to any major news will be provided as well.

So to get you ready for the season to start. Here's the Schedule for the opening as the QMJHL plus several Jr. A Leagues like the North American Hockey League (NAHL), British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) & Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) all start up this weekend.

For things like the Canadian Jr. A Leagues, I will go in cycles because of the high number of leagues at this level. Like the BCHL & AJHL one night, the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) and the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) another night and so on. For events like the NAHL Blaine Showcase and the USHL Fall Showcase, those will have their own pages since they are so many games in one day.

QMJHL Opening Weekend Schedule

With the first of the Junior Hockey Leagues starting up on the weekend of September 10-12 in a just a few weeks. Here's a chance to see the opening weekend schedule for the leagues that will be starting as the QMJHL will be the first of the Major Junior Leagues will be starting while the WHL & OHL will be starting basically 2 weeks later on September 23 & 24.

In addition to the schedule, the Division Format has been changed over the last season. They will be 3 divisions of 6 teams with the Maritime Division staying the same.

While the Central Division was officially dissolved as the Drummondville Voltigeurs and Shawinigan Cataractes moved to the West Division, while the Lewiston Maineaics and Chicoutimi Sagueneens are heading East as the teams that were effected.

QMJHL Revells 2010-2011 Season Schedule & Alters Division Format

With just a few days until the Major Junior Leagues in Canada and the Northern U.S. crowns this season's Memorial Cup Champion.

The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League got their 2010-2011 season off to an early start as the league has revelled the schedule for next season as the season will get underway September 9 as the defending QMJHL Champion Moncton Wildcats will play host the Baie-Comeau Drakkar who finished 2nd to last in the entire Regular Season.

The schedule will be playing just over 80% of its games on the weekends to preserve the Academic Commitments of many of their players as a majority of them in this and in nearly junior league is involved in high school or some kind of junior/community college while their not playing.

In addition to the schedule, the QMJHL has changed up the Divisions again as the league never seems to be happy with a format that they can be happy with. Last year, they had 4 divisions with 3 divisions of 4 teams with the Maritime Division staying the same with their 6 teams that are located in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.).

So this means that the Central Division is all gone as the Drummondville Voltigeurs and Shawinigan Cataractes will be moving to the West. Heading East will be the league's only U.S.A. Team in the Lewiston Maineiacs & Victoriaville Tigers as well. The rest of the East & West Divisions along with the Maritime Division will be unchanged.

Despite a strong showing, Wellwood's OT Winner knockout Wildcats

Despite playing giving one of the best efforts in this year's playoffs and Memorial Cup, Windsor's Eric Wellwood showed why the Spitfires are the defending Champions and looking to defend the Memorial Cup.

His OT Game Winner 12 minutes into the extra period gave the Spitfires a perfect 3-for-3 in the Round Robin and officially clinched a spot in Sunday's Championship Game. For Moncton, despite going up 3-2 early in the 3rd period, the lead didn't last long as Stephane Johnston scored his first of the tournament to tie the game at 3-3.

A total of 33 shots (20-13 in favor of Windsor) were shot as both teams were looking to get the win. A Moncton win would have forced a tie-breaker against the loser of today's Calgary VS. Brandon Winner, but it wasn't to be as the Spitfires turned it on in the OT by out-shooting the Wildcats 13-2, but Moncton Goalie Shane Owen who in for Riopel played very well by stopping 48 of 52 shots just couldn't handle it any longer as he gave up the goal to Wellwood that knocked them out of this year's tournament.

So Windsor will have 4 days off as they will face either Brandon or Calgary in Sunday's Memorial Cup Final. While Brandon and Calgary will finish the round-robin tonight as they size up each other for Friday's Semifinal.

In Brandon, Manitoba: Eric Wellwood of the Windsor Spitfires scored 12:22 into OT to lead the defending MasterCard Memorial Cup Tournament Champions to a 4-3 OT Victory over the Moncton Wildcats.

The Wildcats came out of the game determined to avoid elimination, limiting the Spitfires scoring opportunities with an aggressive fore-check. Randy Cameron broke out of the late stages of the first period. He beat goaltender Philipp Grubauer at 18:36 with a solid wrist-shot on the power-play. It didn't take long for the defending Memorial Cup Champions long to even it up. Cam Fowler redirected a Justin Shugg point shot past Shane Owen with 8 seconds to go in the period. Owen was making his first start of the tournament in place of Nicola Riopel would could not compete due to illness.

Moncton managed to out-shot Windsor 16-12 in the opening frame.

Shugg put the Spitfires up by one in the Early stages of the second period by tipping a great Taylor Hall feed. The rest of the period belonged to the goaltenders with both making a sense of spectacular saves to keep the score 2-1.

There was a lot of excitement in the opening minutes of the third period. Wildcats captain Scott Brannon tied the score up at 2-2 at 2:32 with a hard slap from the blue-line with Mark Cundari and Gabriel Bourque in the penalty box for roughing. Less then a minute later, defensemen Brandon Gormley's blast from the point fooled Grubauer.

But the Spitfires battled back. Stephane Johnson registered his first goal of the tournament to even things up at 4:47.

Gabriel Bourque almost ended it in the closing seconds of the third period, but he hit the crossbar with twenty seconds to play.

Eric Wellwood, a 2009 Philadelphia Flyers draft pick, won it for the Spitfires 12:22 into overtime. He was named the game's third star. Justin Shugg received the first star when Randy Cameron was named the second star.

Game six of the MasterCard Memorial Cup will get going at 7:00 PM as the WHL Champions and Tournament Host Brandon Wheat Kings will began to size each other up for Friday's Semifinal. The winner will have the #2 Seed and will be the designate home team for Friday's Game. You can view on line at www.sportsnet.ca and on the NHL Network in the U.S.A.

2010 Memorial Cup Schedule and Preview

With the Moncton Wildcats clinching the QMJHL Championship in 6 games over the St. John Seadogs last night. The field for this year's CHL Memorial Cup is now set as the Windsor Spitfires will be looking to defend the title that they won last year in Rimouski, QC.

As always, they will have a strong contenders to deal with as the Calgary Hitmen were able to get over the hump after losing last year's WHL Championship to the Kelowna Rockets.

The Moncton Wildcats got to the Memorial Cup with players like Gabriel Bourque with a playoff leading 19 goals.

A strong goaltending performance by Nicola Riopel that was able to stop the Seadogs power forwards like Micheal Kirkpatrick, Stanislav Galiev and Nichols Petersen as the Seadogs only lossed once against P.E.I., and twice against Victoriaville in the Semifinals. The Seadogs also pulled off a sweep against Gatineau in the Quarterfinals.

Windsor as the defending Memorial Cup Champions goes in as favorites with players like Adam Henrique who's been the rising star for the Spitfires along with players like Hall & Fowler. Henrique tied for the playoff scoring lead with Kitchener's Jeff Skinner with 20 goals and would easily be the leading player on just about any other team in the Major Juniors.

The big question for the Spitfires could be secondary scoring, after Henrique and Hall, players like Scott Timmins with 11 goals, plus Dale Mitchell and Zach Kassian with 7 each. Goaltending wise, expect Philipp Grubauer as he started in 18 playoff games by going 16-2 with a 2.69 GAA. Windsor may be the comeback kids, but this tournament is much depper and much more talented then when they came-back last year. A slow start could doom the Spitfires hopes of a 2nd straight Memorial Cup Title.

The Brandon Wheat Kings are looking to make 3 WHL Host Teams in a row to win the Memorial Cup. Kelowna in 2004 and Vancouver in 2007 each won the Memorial Cup when they host it. Brandon has a great combo of size and speed on where they can go up against anybody. An abundance of forwards like Scott Glennie, Matt Calvert and Brayden Schenn who are all NHL Ready in the next year or two. In all, the Wheat Kings had 8 players that scored 20 or more goals during the regular season.

A trade of Jacob De Serres helped booster the Wheat Kings goaltender position back in October. He's helped trade the net with Wheat Kings veteran Andrew Hayes in the rest of the regular season. When the playoffs started though, Jacob De Serres has played a majority of time in net during the playoffs as the Wheat Kings sweep Swift Current Broncos and beat the Saskatoon Blades in 6 games.

This was before the Calgary Hitmen beat them in 5 games in the Eastern Conference Finals. This may be a part of the strategy to help the Wheat Kings get some rest and help them prepare them for the Memorial Cup at home.

Finally the Calgary Hitmen got to the Memorial Cup by beating the Tri-City Americans in 5 games. Look for Brandon Kozun lead the playoffs with 30 points (Including 22 assists). The concern for the Hitmen is that they have some great set-up men. But can players like Joel Broda and Cody Slyvester get enough help scoring goals in a short format where anything can happen.

Martin Jones is very durable as he has played nearly every minute of the playoffs while posting a 2.36 GAA during the Hitmen's post-season run. Can he keep it up for the Memorial Cup to bring the Hitmen their first Memorial Cup in Team History in their 2nd attempt. Back in 1999, the Hitmen got to the Memorial Cup Final before losing to the Ottawa 67s.


Memorial Cup Format: The 4 teams will play a Round-Robin with the 1st Place Team gaining an automatic spot in the Championship.

After the Round Robin, the 2nd Place Team gets into the Semifinals while the 3rd & 4th place team may play a Tie-Breaker if they is a tie for 3rd place. If not, then the 3rd place team automatically gets into the Semifinals. The Semifinal Winner will move on to the Championship Team against the Top Seed.

QMJHL League Semifinals Schedule & Preview

We are down to 4 in the race for the QMJHL Title and it's going to be a battle between the top 2 in the Central & Atlantic Division's as all 4 teams with the best records are left in the playoffs. Due to Victoriaville & Moncton not winning the divisions, they were officially seeded as the #1, #2, #5 & #6 teams in the playoffs the Voltigeurs are hoping to successfully defend the Championship and to get back to the Memorial Cup.

Voltigeurs forwards Gabriel Dumont is leading the QMJHL in playoff points with 17 points (10G 7A) and is also leading the playoffs in goals with 10. Other offensive threats include Christopher Didomenico and Sean Couturier who both have 15 points so far in the playoffs and this threesome is going to give the Moncton Wildcats strong defense all it can handle in the Semifinals.

Moncton is hoping to use their defense to stifle the Voltigeurs offense as the Wildcats have given up 4 or more goals just twice in the playoffs and for OT Play, it could be important as well as Moncton has won all 3 OT Games so far in the playoffs. Moncton's offense will be lead by Kelsey Tessier and Randy Cameron who lead the team with 8 goals.

However, will secondary scoring be a factor in a series where high scoring games will probably happen as no one else has more then 4 goals so far. Can a player like Nicolas Deschamps or Marek Hrivik help in the secondary scoring to keep up with the Voltigeurs attack?

The Series between St. John & Victoriaville should be a great one as both teams are coming off Quarterfinal Sweeps and have been off since April 7. So fighting some rust will definitely be a factor early in the series. The Seadogs have lots of options for set up men as Michael Kirkpatrick, Nicholas Petersen and Simon Despres who each have double digit assists.

While players like Stanislav Galiev and Jonathan Huberdeau are among the goal scoring leaders with 9 goals in the first 2 rounds of the playoffs where Seadogs only lost came against the P.E.I. Rockets in Game 3 of the Divisional Round Series.

Victoriaville will need to have a strong team effort on offense as not a single player who has stood out in the scoring as the defense has lead the way. But without a strong offense, the Tigers could have some problems handling the speed and scoring ability of the Seadogs.

Both of these series are expecting to be long as the top 4 records will be going at it as the Drummondville Voltigeurs will look to defend the QMJHL Title while Victoriaville is looking to make an all Central Division Final for the 2nd straight year.

While Moncton & St. John are looking to make history as the first time we would have an all Atlantic Region Final for the QMJHL Championship as the two New Brunswick Teams are looking to have a rare Memorial Cup Chance for the Provence of New Brunswick.

Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Quarterfinals Schedule

With the Quarterfinals getting underway tomorrow night. Here's a look at the Schedule and a little review of the 1st Round.

Of the 3 Major Junior Leagues, the QMJHL Provided the most drama as we had 2 great series' that went to 7 games. In addition to Montreal VS. Gatineau & Rimouski VS. Chicoutimi series' going the distance, both game 7's went to OT as the Olympiques and the Rimouski Oceanic were able to finish off their series and advance to the QFS.

Some other series that were looking to pull off some upsets were the Val-dor Fourers were able to pull off a game 1 win. Then the next game they were able to keep it close for two periods as Rouyn-Nornda & Val-dor were tied at 3-3 going into the 2nd period before the Huskies scored at the very beginning and very end of the 3rd to pull away.

Games 3 & 4 in Val-dor were also very close as both games were very close 1 goal games. Game 3 saw a 1-0 loss and a 4-3 win. The Huskies were finally able to finish Val-dor in Games 5 & 6 with a 5-1 & 9-4 wins to finish off what turned out to be a great series.

The Teams that looked the most impressive was the Drummondville Voltigeurs as they were the only team to pull off a first round sweep where all 4 wins were by at least 3 goals in the series. Also the two Atlantic Teams in the St. John Seadogs and the Moncton Wildcats made quick work of the P.E.I. Rockets & Cape Breton Screaming Eagles in 5 games each.

The 2nd Round will see the Top Seeded St. John go up against the Gatineau as the Olympiques who were the only 3rd place team advance out of the Divisional Round. Drummondville & Rimouski will go at it for the 2nd straight year after the Voltigeurs sweeped the Oceanic last year. The Ramparts & Victoriaville Tigers will go at it in the #3 VS. #6 Series as the Tigers had to shake off a tough Cataractes Team in the Divisional Round. Finally the Rouyn-Nornda Huskies & Moncton Wildcats will play each other as Moncton had the better record, but will be on the road due to now winning the Atlantic Division.

Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Divisional Round Schedule: East & Atlantic Divisions

I showed you the matchups for the West & Central Divisions earlier. Now here's the schedule and info for the East & Atlantic Divisional Round Series' as the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Playoffs get underway tonight.

With St. John & Moncton having 2 of the best 3 records in the league this season. They is real hope among hockey fans in New Brunswick about a possible All N.B. Final between the Seadogs and the Wildcats. Players like Mike Hoffman who scored 47 goals Nicholas Peterson will be hoping to take their league best 109 points to a QMJHL Championship and a shot of the Memorial Cup Title this season.

Nicholas Deschamps is looking to lead the Wildcats after a shocking loss to the Rimouski Oceanic in the Quarterfinals last season. Look for them to have a strong defense as well as the Wildcats have the best defense in the league by giving up just 168 goals during the regular season and helping out the goaltender duo of Nicola Riopel and Shane Owen to give the Wildcats a shot of winning the Q League Title this season.

Some of the challengers include the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles and the East Division Champion Quebec City Ramparts looking to get back to the Championship after losing to Shawinigan in the Semifinals last season.
