Southlake Carroll Dragons at HS Hockey Nationals

The newly created HS Hockey National Championships will be getting underway tomorrow in Chicago as the Southlake Carroll Dragons will represent Texas as the Dragons will be going up against the Nations best to fight it out and to be crowned the nations first HS Hockey National Championships. After Southlake clinched the State Championship with a win over the Allen Eagles on back on March 28.

In addition to Allen, the Dragons beat Fair/Creek of the Houston Area in the QFS, then in the Semifinals, it was revenge as the Dragons beat the Coppell Cowboys who beat them in the Metroplex Semifinals earlier that week.

Southlake has a boat load of talent which includes the Offensive trio of Marcel Toure, Drew Cossu and Connor Morrow who combined for nearly 130 points during the regular season. The playoffs continued that trend as the goal streak continued during the Metroplex Playoffs plus the State Tournament.

On Defense, Shane Piggott was named the D/FW Defensemen of the year who can beat you both major ways. He can hit and transport the puck, but on offense has the ability to join the attack and be a scoring threat.

After having 22 points during the regular season (8G 14A). During the playoffs, his ability turned much more defensive as the Dragons went through the playoffs. However, when the team goes up against the best in the country. Theirs no doubt that they will need Piggott to be a threat on offense when needed.

In net are Will Talkington & AJ Smith who have been splitting time this season and both goalies had GAA of just over 2.00 and have sv% of just under 89% during the regular season. Talkington took over the goalie position in the post-season as he had a .933 SV% during the post season which averages out at around 91% for the post-season (Both Metroplex Playoffs & State Tournament).

Overall the Dragons are stocked with talent and should be looking to Texas proud and have a shot of advancing out of the Group Stage to have a shot of possibly winning the National Championship which begins tomorrow in Chicago.

Southlake Carroll has been placed in a group with teams from Illinois, Colorado & Pennsylvania. With all 3 states known for having great hockey, Southlake Carroll will have a tough road to the national Championship. But it has proven to take on tough tasks of all kinds during the season.

The Dragons begin against New Trier (Illinois), with the state of Illinois hosting the tournament, expect a huge crowd for the two host teams for this event. Next up on Thursday is Brophy of Colorado, the State of Colorado was able to get 2 teams in the event due to USA Hockey National Rankings. Finally, the Dragons will wrap up the group stage against Shaler Area of Pennsylvania which could be the make or brake game depending on the standings.

In all 24 teams will be playing in the tournament. In order to advance to the Quarterfinals, Southlake will either need to win their group, or be one of the top 2 Group Runner Ups.

DFW HS Hockey Championship Night

Here's a look at how the AT&T Metroplex HS Hockey Championship went back on Wednesday night. In the early cap it was Tyler Dean & Collin Steinmetz who lead the way with a goal & assist each as the Garland ISD Stampede claimed their first ever Title as the Stampede proved to the league that they were worthy of being the top seeded team in the Silver Tier as the Stampede beat Grapevine, Richardson ISD & finally Plano East to clinch the Silver Division Title.

In the Gold Tier, it was spouse to be a battle of goalies. However, the Harley Brothers in Brad and Brandon along with Kim who each scored twice as the Cowboys were able to blitz the Eagles 6-2 with a big factor being that they were able to dominate the 2nd period to pull away.

The final nail in the coffin as the Cowboys scored twice in just 8 seconds midway through the 3rd to make the championship official. For the Cowboys, they beat Plano West in the best of 3 Quarterfinal, then the top seeded Southlake Carroll Dragons in the Semifinal. Finally a great performance that for the most part was never in doubt against the Allen Eagles.

Silver Tier Championship

Garland ISD Stampede 4 Plano East Panthers 2 (0-1, 2-0, 2-1)

When the playoffs started for Garland ISD, the Stampede wanted to prove their were worthy of being the top seed out of a very tough East Division. On Wednesday Night, Garland ISD came back from a slow start after an early goal by Plano East forward Ben Gehrke just 3 minutes into the game.

After that, the first period was a very fast paced game with lots of speed, few penalties and some great scoring chances. Despite the scoring chances, the Stampede looked pretty sloppy, especially on defense where the Panthers could have gone up big early on in the game. Especially late in the first where East went on a 5-on-3 and had some good scoring chances, especially on a long slap shot that went just wide and whiffing on a spin-o-rama shot that hit the post.

But the Garland ISD Goaltending stayed firm to keep it a 1-0 Plano East Lead with the Panthers out-shooting GISD 10-6.

It was special teams early in the 2nd period where Garland began to comeback where the Stampede scored late on a 5-on-3 when Colin Steinmetz on a great job setting up a play where he got assists by Tyler Dean and Josh Crouch. Just a couple of minutes later, Tyler Dean scored to give the Stampede their first lead of the night at 6:49 of the 2nd period.

After the 2nd goal, both teams played a much more cautious game as both teams were getting much more picky on when to attack and took a defensive stanch. Near the end of the 2nd period, both teams had some great chances to get a late goal, first it was Austin Mcleod who let a long shot go that went just over the cross bar from about 35 feet out. Then for GISD, a late scramble where a blocked shot to deflect it out to keep the game GISD 2 Plano East 1 through 2 periods.

The 3rd period started fast as Joey Thomas helped set up a goal just 26 seconds into the 3rd period to make it 3-1 Stampede. Garland had the momentum, but Plano East wouldn't give up just yet as Jason Cotton netted his 6th goal of the post-season midway through the 3rd period on a 2-on-1 where Appell set up a breakaway and it was passed to Demuth who sent it to Cotton for the goal to make it 3-2.

Wity about 5 minutes left, the hitting picked up as Plano East was hopping to ware down the Stampede Smaller players to get in a spot to get the game tied. But some great saves down the stretch by Dylan Day kept the Stampede leading. Then an empty netter by Stephen Gullien put the Stampede out of reach and to celebrate the AT&T Metroplex HS Hockey League Silver Tier Championship for the 1st time in their history.


Gold Tier Championship

Allen Eagles 2 Coppell Cowboys 6 (1-1, 0-3, 1-2)

What was expecting to be a goalie duel between the area's top goalies in Derek Wilms and Spencer Harris turned into a rout as the Harley Brothers Brandon and Brad, plus Sam Kim each scored twice to pull away from the Eagles to win the Gold Tier Title 6-2.

In a game where physicality and goaltending were expecting to be the big headlines. It turned into a scoring game as both teams were attacking very early on as the Eagles were looking to attack early and were stopped by Willis with a couple of big saves in the first of couple of minutes. At the 6 minute mark however, Allen's Garrett Master scored his 2nd of the playoffs from Taylor Ryan Jones to make it 1-0 Eagles.

Just a couple of minutes later, Allen had a shot to make it 2-0 on what was a conversely penalty shot Call that probably shouldn't have been called and it was taken by Allen's Superstar forward Tyler Steen, the air went out of the room when he missed just wide. After the game stayed 1-0, Sam Kim who's more known for his hitting ability who scored his first of 2 on the night to make it 1-1.

After the goal, things got chippy but stayed clean for the most part as the game went along. Only a handful of penalties were called in the game, but it was Allen who was out-shooting Coppell 14-9 in the game.

At the start of the 2nd period, Coppell had a great breakaway chance by Brandon Harley but was stopped by Brandon Harley but was stopped by Spencer Harris to keep it tied. But on the next faceoff, the Coppell offense began to smoother Harris as Brandon Harley made it 2-1 at just 3:19. The 2nd period just belonged to Coppell as Allen looked shocked as the Cowboys offense was as strong as it was. Going into the playoffs, Coppell's secondary scoring didn't look strong when you look at the stats, but the offense they did have on Wednesday night was lethal when it counted the most.

After Allen looked to play carefully on defense cost them when Brandon Harley scored his 2nd of the night on the PP to make it 3-1. Then Allen broke one of hockey's biggest golden rules as your not spouse to give up a goal either in the opening or final minute of a period as Brandon's Brother Brad scored his 2nd of the night in the final minute of the 2nd. It was set up on a great faceoff from Sam Kim who registered his 2nd point of the night.

By the 3rd period this was Coppell's game to lose as the Cowboys defense was able to reign in the Steen Brothers and just gave Spencer Harris a really tough night. The night was complete when Brandon Harley and Sam Kim scored just 8 seconds apart apart midway through the 3rd period to make it 6-2.

Only a Collen Daniels goal 4 minutes into the 3rd period was the only thing that the Eagles could muster in a game where the Eagles just got dominated in the 2nd & 3rd periods. Coppell also ended a long drought as the Cowboys reclaimed their place as the AT&T Metroplex HS Hockey Champions on the Gold Tier.

D/FW HS Hockey League Gold Tier Championship

Location & Time: 8:00 PM @ Farmers Branch Starcenter

Tonight's DFW HS Hockey Championship night will feature teams that have used strong goaltending with few sparks of offense to get them through to tonight's Final. Both teams have among the area's best goaltending as Derek Wilms has a 1.61 GAA through 3 playoff games. The early game will have the Silver Tier Title Game as Garland ISD will take on Plano East. While in the late cap, it will be Allen VS. Coppell for the Gold Tier Title.

His opposition tonight in net will be Allen's Spencer Harris has a strong 1.63 GAA, and one of the league's best SV% at .932 SV% and with the exception of Game 2 against Dallas Jesuit in the Quarterfinals has given up 3 goals or fewer with the help of a great offense.

One of Coppell's big worries for tonight is the secondary scoring as no one has more then 2 goals and during the regular season as only 2 players had double digit goals and Brandon Harley who lead the scoring with just 13 goals.

Coppell's defense is spouse to be really strong with players like Aaron Wright and Charlie Busch that are looking to join in on the attack. Meanwhile, players like Brad Harley are wanting to bring the hits and is not afraid to drop the gloves as well.

If Coppell is going to have a great shot of winning, a strong team defense is going to need to be the corner-stone of a successful game plan to bring the Gold Tier Championship back to Coppell tonight.

Allen is going to need to support Spencer Harris in the Allen net, but where I think this game will be won by Allen tonight is the stronger offense to support the Eagles with players like the Steen Brothers in Tyler and Bryce.

Tyler also finished in the top 5 during the regular season being surrounded by the Southlake Trio of Connor Morrow, Marcel Toure and Drew Cossu. Several players that could play a part in the secondary scoring with players like Taylor Ryan Jones and Alex Garrison who despite not scoring had a great game in the Semifinal against Southlake Carroll.

Watch out for Ben Owen as he's been able to join in on the offense while he can dish out some hits as well. Some other defensemen for Allen should include players like Mason Haunschild and Brian Clinton to give the Eagles a tough defensive presence on the ice.

During the regular season, both games between the two teams went OT with the Cowboys winning both times. However, the Eagles are looking to reverse that trend as both games were very close. This game should be another nail bitter with a low scoring game and don't be surprised if we see OT again here tonight.

Bottom Line: Expect both teams to have a great defense and goaltending. The main difference is going to be Allen's Offense. It's got more bite to it and with them being fresher from having an easier playoff road and better skill players, the Eagles will be winning the Gold Tier Championship.

I will be heading to the Farmers Branch Starcenter tonight for the Game 2's in the best of 3 Series between the Southlake Carroll Dragons and the Frisco ISD. Plus Dallas Jesuit playing Allen as the top 2 seeds will be looking to close out their series tonight and advance to the Semifinals.

Be sure to check out some of the best talent in the area with players like Marcel Toure, Connor Morrow and Drew Cossu looking to close out Frisco ISD tonight and advance to the Semifinals. The 1st Quarterfinal will be at 6:30 PM tonight.

Texas HS Update

AT&T Metroplex HS Hockey League (D/FW)

Last week, the Southlake Carroll Dragons were able to give the Allen Eagles their first regulation loss of the season thanks to a 3 goal 3rd period with goals by Zack Halle, Blake Beall and Chris Mochulsky gave the Dragons their biggest win of the season and have pulled within one point of the Gold Tier Lead as we near the midway point of the season in the Dallas area.

Elsewhere, The haves and have nots in the Dallas Area are starting to become quite clear as Allen, SL Carroll, Plano West, Coppell and Plano Senior are in the top 5 being seperated by just 5 points. On the bottom end of the Gold Tier, we have Flower Mound, Dallas Jesuit, and Frisco ISD who are tied with 8 points each through 11 games, while Mckinney ISD and Highland Park will be looking to move up just 1 and 3 points back of the 3 way tie for 6th and are currently out of the playoff picture right now.

This weeks marquee game in the Gold Division will be 8-1-2 SL Carroll taking on 8-3-0 Plano West. For SL Carroll, a win and an Allen loss by Mckinney will take them into the top spot. We also have 2 imporant games in the bottom end of the Gold Division as Flower Mound will take on Dallas Jesuit as these teams will look to break away and be able to challenge the top 5 right now as we head into the halfway point of the season.

Down in the Silver, Garland will look to make it 12 in a row as the Stampede will take on 6-6-0 Arlington Martin who's looking to move up in the West Division to catch up with Keller ISD and Midlothian. Another big Cross Division game will have Richardson ISD take on West Division leaders Keller ISD as Richardson will need to find a way to stop Keller's strong offense which is among the best team offenses in the Silver Tier with 63 goals this season.

Speaking of scoring explosion, FM Marcus had their scoring capade stopped by Southlake Carroll by keeping them to just 5 goals, but it didn't stop their winning streak with a 5-3 win over the Dragons to stay tied for 1st with the Denton County Spartans. Currently, the Maruders have gotten points in 6 straight dating back to November 5 when they lost in OT to Garland ISD.

Tonights HS Games in D/FW

The big HS News this week was that the NYTEX Sports Center has announced that will host it's 1st ever HS Game coming up on November 12 that Keller ISD.

This will be used to see if the NYTEX Sports Center can be a regular venue for HS and some of the older age groups for big travel events during the hockey season, currently the Brahmas use the rink and their youth team use it for the most part, but the Brahmas would look to see more events their for people that live in places like Keller, Southlake and North Richland Hills.

Else where in the area, the Allen Eagles are looking back top form as the Eagles are a perfect 5-0 record with Coppell and Southlake Carroll just below them with 8 points each in the standings, however, Southlake Carroll hasn't lost a game in relegation yet this year, both of the loses came in the first 2 games of the season with losses to Allen and Coppell in OT.

Flower Mound looks to be rebuilding after winning the League Championship last season with a 1-2-2 record, for the Jaguars it's not going to get any easier as they will take on Allen tonight in the Farmers Branch Starcenter.

In the Silver Tier, the Denton County Spartans were taken down by the Southlake Carroll Silver Team 2-1 with goals by Ryan Rogers and Matthew Zaragoza to end the Spartans unbeaten run after winning the 1st 5 in a row.

Also Garland ISD is has had a nice return to the Varsity Level as they are currently the only unbeaten team in the Silver Tier and a +22 GD, not surprisingly Marcus Ortiz is leading the Silver Tier in scoring with 17 points (13G 4A) while Tyler Steen of Allen is leading the Gold Tier with 9 points (7G 2A).
