Central Hockey League Week Ahead for 2/22-26

Despite seeing both the Allen Americans going to the Shootout for the 4th time in the last 6 games. It was the Brahmas who the shootout and the game for the 2nd time in 11 days and the 3rd straight time as the Brahmas have owned the Americans as of late by pulling off their 3rd straight victory over the Rivals from Colin County in a 2-1 game where Mark Guggenberger had another outstanding performance by making 26 of 27 saves to earn his 7th straight win including giving up a goal or less in 6 of those games that earned him the CHL Goalie of the Week for the week of February 13-19.

Tulsa also had their game go to Overtime that saw them lost 2-1 to Ft. Wayne that saw their gap between them and 5th Place Rio Grande Valley grow to 5 points with 2 games in hand (Tulsa with 17 GR, RGV with 15 GR) this season.

As for the rest of the week, the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees has a chance to climb back in the race as they sit 5 points back with 15 games left in the regular season as they will face South Texas Rival Laredo Bucks and then a pair of games against the Turner Conference Bottom Feeder Bloomington Blaze on Friday & Saturday and hope that Guggenberger and the Rock Hard Defense will be playing the Brahmas for a 3 game weekend starting in Tulsa on Friday.

Then coming back to Dallas to play on Saturday & Sunday as the Killer Bees have one of their better chances to close the gap with Tulsa for the fourth & final playoff spot in the Berry Conference.

With the entire league coming down to the final 15 games. We could have a battle possibly brewing for the 2nd spot as many thought the Americans & Thunder would comfortably have 1st Round Home Ice while battling for home ice advantage in the Southern Conference & taking on the Evansville Ice Men & Ft. Wayne Komets for home ice throughout the entire playoffs.

However, with the Brahmas winning 7 in a row and Mark Guggenberger starting to heat up in goal, it could have the Americans sweating (Not heavily yet) about a possible battle between the DFW Rivals for 1st Round Home Ice. One big advantage for the Americans is that Allen has 2 games in hand where they can easily extend & protect their lead.

Texas will be looking to bank on a 6 game homestand that will begin Saturday Night with a pair of games against the Tulsa Oilers on Saturday & Sunday. They will also play a pair of games against Rio Grande Valley as well as Missouri & Laredo to finish their final extended homestand of the regular season.

Rio Grande Valley Falls to Evansville for the 2nd straight night

After nearly pulling off a SO Victory on Tuesday Night, the Killer Bees couldn't find a way to keep the Turner Conference Leaders from getting a series sweep as the Icemen continue to keep a slim lead over the Ft. Wayne Komets for the Conference Lead, while the Killer Bees, paired with the Brahmas victory over the Dayton Gems last night are now 4 points out of the Tulsa Oilers for the final playoff spot in the Berry Conference with 18 games left to play.

The bad news for the Killer Bees is that in addition to seeing their chances of catching up to Tulsa are beginning to diminish (Especially after a 9-6 loss on Sunday), they have also played the most games in the Conference shard with Texas as both teams are nearing the 50 game mark of the season.

Rio Grande Valley was able to keep it at a 1-0 game till just after the 3rd period where Sean O'Connor was able to score for the 2nd straight game against the Killer Bees to make it 2-0. Despite being down 2-0 & Thomas Klempa made it 2-1 with just over 5 minutes left in the 3rd period. He also came close on a couple of occasion's including missing an open net early in the 3rd period that could have tied the game at 1-1 and could have changed the outlook of the game.

The Killer Bees failed on an opportunity that they still could have been serious playoff contenders and not only make the playoffs. But look to show that they could play tough against anybody in the League as they were only able to get a point in the 2 games against Evansville. Lucky for them, Tulsa has been off since the 9-6 victory against the Killer Bees back on Sunday Afternoon; so the Oilers couldn't take advantage of the Killer Bees missed opportunities.

Next up for Rio Grande Valley is an important road trip to the Dallas Area for a weekend series against the Texas Brahmas as they look to close in on the 3rd Place Brahmas and once again close in on the playoff gap.

As for the Oilers who the Killer Bees are chasing is a game on Friday Night against the same Evansville Icemen finish off their 3 game Road Trip. This is the Oilers' only game of the weekend as they continue their 5 game home stand. So far, the Oilers are 2-1 on the home stand with a 4-1 loss against Evansville, as well as a 4-2 win over the Dayton Gems back on Tuesday Night.

From Hildago, Texas: Dan Gendur tried to take the blame for the Killer Bees' 3-1 loss Wednesday to the Evansville Icemen.

He pointed out a breakaway on which he was stopped by Evansville Goalie Bryan Gills and an open net he missed early in the 3rd period. But Gendur - who assisted on Thomas Klempa's 3rd period goal - wasn't nearly the problem for the Bees (20-22-7 47 PTS) during a loss that kept them four points behind Tulsa for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Berry Conference.

Instead, that would be the Bees' struggles on the special teams. Evansville first two goals came on its power play while the Turner Conference Leading IceMen (30-13-4, 64 PTS) stopped the Bees on their four chances with an advantage.

Those issues overshadowed an improved performance, albeit one not good enough for a win and two crucial points.

"I thought it was even game. I feel like I may have cost the team the game tonight," Gendur said. "Missed a wide open and missed a breakaway I probably should have scored on. I'll take a responsibility and I feel pretty bad considering it would have made it a 2-2 game and possibly could have gotten us a point."

Bees coach Terry Ruskowski didn't see it that way.

What he saw was a team that played a solid defensive game in front of goalie Wylie Rogers (26 Saves on 29 Shots), but one didn't do enough on special teams or get enough production from anybody besides the Gendur-Klempa-Brandon Campos line.

"It's just not all fitting together in one spot but I thought we played hard today," Ruskowski said. "I'd like to see us play more physical but we just don't have that physical team."

What the Bees also seem to be lacking is an ability to put everything together at the same time. On some nights they score plenty but break down defensively, like in Sunday's 9-6 loss at Tulsa. On Wednesday, they matched one of the league's best teams at even strength.

But the difference was special teams. Evansville's Malcom Gwilliam scored on the power play in the second after a failed clearance. Then with 8:16 left in the game Sean O'Connor got lost in the shuffle and beat Rogers from the goalie's right side after receiving a sharp diagonal pass from IceMen defensemen Steve Makway to double Evansville's lead.

Though Klempa's goal with 5:16 left in the game cut the deficit in half, Evansville held and clinched the win when former Bees center Brian Bicek hit an empty net with five seconds remaining.

"I thought it was a better performance (than Tuesday). We were moving the puck," Ruskowski. "They're a good hockey team. They move the puck very well. They play good position and when you make a mistake they make you pay for it."

The Bees learned that Wednesday.

Game Notes: Bicek's goal is his 30th of the season and makes him the first player in the league to reach that total.   Evansville played with 14 skaters.   The Bees play again on Friday & Saturday when they visit the Texas Brahmas. The Brahmas beat Dayton 2-0 on Wednesday to pull 9 points ahead of the Bees for third place in the Berry Conference.  The Bees are winless in their last four games.

In the Crease Podcast with Justin Quenneville

It's time for another In The Crease Podcast with Corpus Christi Icerays Beat Writer Greg Rajan as he talks to Corpus Christi Icerays Head Coach Justin Quenneville as he discusses the current playoff race, Anthony Stolarz's great season he's having which included making both the NAHL U18 Selects Team for the upcoming Prospects Tournament; and him making the NHL Draft Rankings. Also what he was going through he was offered a coaching job when the IceRays made the transition from Minor League's to Juniors.

Quenneville also reflects on his favorite moments during his Pro Career with the Ice Rays and why he thanks that Junior Hockey in the NAHL has worked so well in their first 2 seasons. A big part of the appeal Quenneville thanks that has made a big impact including the entrainment factor. "The Energy, they hit so much harder and so much faster," said Quenneville. "Were going to explain first what this level is and explaining what this represents'." Showing current fans and trying to attract new fans as well as they look to show that they are capable of playing in the NCAA & Pro Ranks later in their career.

A good example of this is Anthony Stolarz who not only has made a NCAA Commitment to the University of Nebraska-Omaha in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) but was also ranked 21st among NHL Goalies when the NHL Central Scouting Mid-Season Rankings came out back in January.

Also joining Greg Rajan was Brian Sandalow of The Monitor in Mcallen who covers the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees in the Central Hockey League discusses' one of the most wild and wacky Games of the Central Hockey League season between the Killer Bees & Tulsa Oilers back on Sunday Afternoon that the Oilers won 9-6 back on Sunday Afternoon.

It included the Killer Bees having to comeback from a 5-1 deficit to a 5-5 tie only to lose 9-6 in what was a very important game in the CHL Berry Conference Playoff Race for the 4th & Final Playoff Spot with about a month-and-a-half left in the regular season. A huge offensive explosion for the Oilers helped them in their victory where 8 players had multiple point games.

He also gives his take on the Berry Conference Playoff Race where the Wichita Thunder are currently 4 points up on the Allen Americans for the Conference Lead and pulled off a critical victory against the Americans back on February 9th, 4-2.

Tulsa nips Rio Grande Valley 5-4 to climb to 3rd Place in the Berry Conference

The Tulsa Oilers & RGV Killer Bees gave the fans in Tulsa a strong game in a huge battle for the 4th & Final Playoff spot in the Berry Conference. Tulsa was lead by the likes of Mike Ullrich and Jeff Terminesi to help edge the Killer Bees in a high scoring 5-4 victory for the Oilers that was determined early in the 3rd period when Michel Beausoleli scored his 11th of the season to break a 4-4 deadlock at the 1:59 mark of the 3rd period.

This win for huge, not only because the gap between the Oilers & Killer Bees is now at 5 points for the 4th & Final Playoff Spot, but also they were also able to jump ahead of the Texas Brahmas for 3rd as both teams are now tied for 3rd Place by having 1 more win (21 for Tulsa, 20 for Texas) in 1 fewer game over the course of the season.

The Oilers will now hope that the Laredo Bucks beat the Texas Brahmas tonight to keep it that way as the Bucks & Brahmas play each other tonight at 7:00 PM. Tulsa's next game will see them head to Dallas play the Allen Americans on both Friday & Saturday. RGV on the other hand will be at home to play the Wichita Thunder on Friday & the Texas Brahmas on Saturday coming up this weekend.

RGV VS. Tulsa Game Story on the Central Hockey League Website

From Tulsa, Oklahoma: With Critical points on the line, the Oilers rose to the occasion and fought off a feisty Rio Grande Valley squad to post a 5-4 victory in front of 3,633 fans at the BOK Center.

The Bees set a tone for a wild first period when Dan Gendur scored just 36 seconds into the proceedings. Dylan Clark answered right back for Tulsa, but Zac Pearson put Rio Grande Valley back in front with a shorthanded marker at 12:16. The Killer Bees pushed pushed the lead to 3-1 on Gendur's second of the game at 17:59. Unphased, the Oilers bounced back with a pair of goals by Gary Steffes and Sean Erickson in the span of 35 seconds. The squads went into the first intermission after an opening of 20 minutes that featured six goals on 21 shots.

In the final minute of the second period, the Oilers took their first lead of the night when Scott Balan inadvertently tapped the puck into his own net on a Tulsa Power Play. The home team's lead lasted all of 14 seconds. Gendur's snapped a shot past Ian Keserich with nine seconds left in the period to complete the hat trick and pull the Bees even at four apiece.

Tulsa put together a couple strong shifts early in the third and hard work paid off. Michel Beausoleil sent a backhand through the legs of Bees netminder Wylie Rogers to put the Oilers in front for good. Keserich made 11 of his 24 saves in the third to preserve the win, the Oilers sixth one-goal decision in the last seven games.

Four Oilers, Mike Ullrich, Jeff Terminesi, Steffes, and Erickson, finished with multiple points as Tulsa won back-to-back for the first time since December 27. With points in six games, the Oilers have tied their longest point streak of the season.

Tulsa returns to action Friday & Saturday for a pair of games against Allen.

Greg Rajan In the Crease Podcasts

A recent addition to Greg Rajan's hockey coverage of the Corpus Christi Icerays is his Podcast called In the Crease where he talks to current & Former Players Junior & Minor League Players. As well as coaches, GMS, Owners and Media that cover these levels of hockey.

A couple of his recent interviews included former Corpus Christi Iceray from the CHL Days and current Texas Brahmas Forward Chad Wollard about the league's new playoff format, who he thinks the Brahmas biggest rival is and and a bizarre episodes that he has witnessed over the course of his career including when a rival folded in Mid-Season and became the teams new head coach.

Also in his recent episode is Brian Sandalow of The Monitor in McAllen where he covers the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees who has been one of the league's biggest surprises this season after many felt the team was going to fold last summer. Currently the Killer Bees sit in 5th Place just a point back of the Tulsa Oilers for the 4th & Final Playoff Spot in the Berry Conference with just under 30 games left in the regular season.

1/24 Episode

He was also able to get a fans perceptive from Ice Rays Fan Robert Hutchinson who has been a huge fan and season ticket holder of the Corpus Christi Icerays since the early days of the team playing in the Central Hockey League. Rajan got his thoughts on main issues like the team's lack of success on the ice, but it how continues to gain big crowds. The recent brawl between the Tornado & Ice Rays that resulted in 6 different players getting suspended, including Skyler Spiller for 10 games.

Also the biggest pros & cons of the Junior Game and losing South Texas Rivals with the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees and the Laredo Bucks as well as looking to see where they futures could be if the Central Hockey League can't survive with all the problems the league has had in recent years regarding teams either folding or moving to different leagues like the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) and the North American Hockey League.

Central Hockey League Rosters

With the Central Hockey League season beginning Tomorrow night, here's a look at the Southwest Teams as the final rosters are getting ready to come out. In addition to the rosters, several major rivalries are going to dominate headlines on the opening weekend, like the Brahmas & Americans at the Allen Events Center where the Americans are going to raise the CHL Southern Conference Championship Banner on October 15 and the South Texas Rivalry between the Laredo Bucks and Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees.

Other major rivalries include the Tulsa Oilers and Wichita Thunder and the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs VS. Mississippi Riverkings which will be a home-and-home matchup with the Mudbugs hosting the first leg on Friday Night.

Some of the big news from over the off-season includes the return of Chad Woolard who has had the nickname "Mr. Brahma" for his great play in the past with the team when it was located at the Ft. Worth Civic Center in the team's early history. This past season he was with the Corpus Christi Icerays in their final year in the Central Hockey League before leaving for the North American Hockey League to become a Junior Team.

Other teams he's played with include the Mississippi Riverkings and Quad City Mallards in the CHL. As well as some time in the ECHL with the Greensboro Generals and Jackson Bandits. As well as a short Stint in the AHL with the Utah Grizzlies, St. John's Maple Leafs and San Antonio Rampage as well. He has never suited up in an NHL Game in his career.

As for players moving, Allen Americans Defensemen Brandon Struab has signed a contract with the Detroit Red Wings AHL Affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins recently.

Other Americans players that were involved in the CHL Southern Conference Championship include the offensive trio of Nino Musitelli, Justin Bowers and Bruce Graham who all combined for 215 points last season during the regular season and then 78 points combined in the post-season where the Americans came up 2 wins shy of a CHL Presidents Cup Title in their very season of professional hockey in Allen.

Here's a look at the schedule for the opening weekend of the regular season involving the CHL Southwest Teams. A lot of rivalries will be going, including Texas VS. Allen, RG Valley VS. Laredo and Tulsa VS. Wichita on Friday Night. I will also show links to the rosters for all the teams. Keep in mind that final rosters for the most part won't come out until just before the team's first game of the season.

Laredo & Rio Grande Valley will battle for Mayors Challenge Cup

In an effort to help spice up the Texas Border rivalry, the mayor of Laredo has announced an agreement between the Laredo Bucks & Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees in an event called the "Cricket's Mayor Cup" which was announced in a press conference with Laredo Mayor Raul G. Salinas. Now will we need to hear a response from the mayor of Hidalgo Mayor David Franz will need to accept the challenge before the event can take place.

This is an interesting idea to spice up hockey in the Southwest. Hopefully both teams will team up to help build up one of the most unlikely hockey rivalries in North America.

Press Release from the Central Hockey League

From Laredo, Texas: Mayor of Laredo Raul G. Salinas, conjunction with the Central Hockey League's Laredo Bucks, challenged the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees' Monday to participate in the first ever Cricket Mayor's Cup for the 2010-2011 season. The challenge was made in front of the media and a number of fans during a press conference at Laredo's City Hall.

"We want to boost our Bucks rivalry with the Bees to the next level and get the city of Hidalgo involved as well," Salinas said. "We are proud of the Bucks and went to challenge the city of Hidalgo and the Bees during the season to see who earns the most points between the two teams. The team who earns the most points head-to-head against each other will win the Cricket Cup."

If Hidalgo Mayor John David Franz and the Killer Bees accept the challenge more details of the Cricket's Mayor's Cup will be announced.

The winning team will pick a local charity to donate $5,000 to on behalf of Cricket.

"We will be waiting for the city of Hidalgo and the Killer Bees response to the challenge. I think it will be a great addition to the ice rivalry."

The Bucks and Killer Bees will meet 16 times this season with eight taking place at Laredo Energy Center and eight at the State Farm Arena in Hidalgo. In seven seasons facing off against each other the Bucks lead the all time regular season series with the Bees 64-21-8, including 11-0-3 last season.

"We went to Cricket Wireless with the idea of the Mayor's Cup and they were very excited to get involved with this project. Cricket is well represented in Laredo and in the Valley and make a great partner of the Cup", said Salinas.

Q&A with RGV Killer Bees Head Coach Chris Brooks

Recently the Central Hockey League sat down with Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees Head Coach to get a feel of how the off-season was going after the team failed to make the playoffs by 4 points over the Corpus Christi Icerays who finished 5th in the South.

In three years with the Killer Bees, he's 62-51-15 with little playoff success, the last time the Killer Bees made the postseason was in 2009 where after winning the Play In, the Brahmas swept them in 4 games straight.

Look for more coaches interviews as the Central Hockey League does a segment called "They Said It". Other coaches coming up include Rapid City Rush Head Coach Joe Ferras.

Here's the Records from the last 3 seasons dating back to the 2007-2008 season.

2007-2008 Season

Regular Season: 16-41-7 39 PTS, Last in Southeast DIV, Last in Southern Conference

Playoffs: Didn't make Playoffs

2008-2009 Season

Regular Season: 35-24-5 73 PTS, 3rd in Southeast DIV, 4th in Southern Conference

Playoffs: Conf. Play In Beat CRP 2-1, Conf. SFS Lost to TEX 4-0

2009-2010 Season

Regular Season: 27-27-10 64 PTS, 6th Place in Southern Conference

Playoffs: Out of Playoffs

Here's the Q&A

How has the offseason been so far for you?

The offseason has been good. It has been very busy recruiting wise and doing a lot of the little things that are required to prepare for the upcoming season. As a coach you spend a lot of time on the phone networking and talking to agents and trying to find players that are the right fit for your team. Recruiting is a time consuming part of the job, as you have to be available to prospective players and their agents 24 hours a day. At the same point, it is necessary to have balance in your life and try your best to make time to relieve yourself from your job a bit.

What changes do you feel are necessary for the Bees for this season?

Reflecting on last season, I don't feel we were that far off. We had a lot of untimely injuries that really impacted our team at various points. Was I satisfied finishing 27-27-10? Definitely not, but at the same point our team battled right down to the end of the season. It's important to continue to build our team around the locker room and in order to do that you need players with character and drive and you need players who aspire to play hockey at the highest level that you can possibly play at.

It is critical for us to be a team that other teams in the league hate to play, whether it is at home or on the road. Other teams need to know exactly what they are going to get when they play us every night. Other teams need know that we are going to compete and be tenacious from start to finish. In order to achieve that we have added size and grit to our blueline in signing Kyle Radke, Karl Medernach, Kirk Medernach, Matt Smyth and Rob Cowan.

As a Head Coach, what did you learn the most from your first year to second year in RGV?

I have learned so much about myself and a person and a coach through my time in Rio Grande Valley. My biggest strength as a coach is the ability to teach. In order for me to teach, I feel we need players that want to learn. We need players that put the team first and will do anything asked of them. If we can get a group like that we will have a team. If you have a team that works towards a common goal, you can have success. I want to surround myself with players that are not satisfied playing in the CHL. I have also learned that this is a business. You have to make decisions best for the team and the organization, and put personal feelings that you have for players aside. Sometimes that is difficult to do.

You have signed size and toughness, are you changing the focus and game plan for the team this season?

My focus and game plan for the team this upcoming season has not changed. I have just been fortunate that the players that I have pursued to come play in Rio Grande Valley have size and toughness. Now the goal is continue to build with some skilled players around what we have signed.

You obviously think highly of character players and those who play both ways (I.E. Mcclellan and Lee). What do those type of players mean for your hockey team?

Charcter is one of my key priorities that I look in for my players. The Players I bring here are a reflection of our owner, our front office and me. I have been fortunate over my two seasons in Rio Grande Valley to have a lot of great character players. Two of those players, Zac Mclellan and Aaron Lee characterize the type of players I want to coach. The approach every single day like is their last, they are coachable, hungry and unbelievable team guys that will do anything for the best of the team. They are great in the community and in the locker room and they make coaching rewarding and enjoyable.

The Bees and Bucks will meet a bunch of times during the regular season, how big is that rivalry and do you think of the recruiting, players that match up well against the Bucks?

Our rivalry with Laredo plays a key role in our success. Terry Ruskowski is one of the most successful coaches in minor pro hockey and you know his team will be ready to play every night. They are well coached and well prepared. In return that is why it is so important for us to be even better prepared. Terry is a coach that gets the most out of his players and heading into the season, we know that the 16 games we play against Laredo will be battles.

The fans support the Killer Bees is so steady, what has been the trick in keeping them on the edge of their seats?

Our fans are unbelievable. When I left Western Michigan in 2008, the org, the front office, and the fans are the big reason why I took this job. Our owner and front office staff do an unbelievable job entertaining and making the fans experience an enjoyable one. At the same time, the fans and our organization, making Rio Grande Valley a great place for our players to play. Our front office staff is very creative and the corporate and community support continues to grow.

What are your thoughts on the CHL's Playoff Format with 16 of 18 teams making the playoffs, would you be offended to be the 8th team in the Conference?

I knew this was going to be asked! I have been asked so many times since this decision was made. I think this is the cleanest way for the CHL to set up the playoffs. If we went to 12 of 16 teams making the post season, people would have criticized it. Setting up the playoffs is a no win situation. Some will like it some won't. I support the decision. Regardless of how many teams make the playoffs, my goal as a coach to approach the season game by game and our focus is to improve every single day in pursuit of a championship.

2010-2011 Central Hockey League Schedule Announced

The schedule for the 2010-2011 season was just released moments ago as the CHL Regular Season will get underway on October 15 to start the 66 game season. One of the major highlights of opening weekend will be the D/FW Rivalry as the Allen Americans & Texas Brahmas will kick off with a Weekend series in Allen.

Other interesting matchups involving the Southwest Teams during opening weekend will be the South Texas Rivalry as the Laredo Bucks & Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees will hook up from Rio Grande City.

As for teams other in Odessa, Bossier-Shreveport and Tulsa. The Jackalopes who were ousted for the 2nd straight year in the Southern Conference Final will open up against the Missouri Mavericks and Quad City Mallards. This is part of a busy road schedule early on where 8 of the first 10 games will be on the road, the only exception will be a pair of home games against the Laredo Bucks on October 28 & 30.

Bossier-Shreveport will open with a home-and-home against the Mississippi Riverkings while the Tulsa Oilers will do the same thing against the Wichita Thunder on opening weekend.

Just like in previous years, a majority of the games will be on the weekends early on in the season. Then later on the league adds more week night games as we close in on the playoffs which begin in late March.

Some other interesting matchups starting out will be the Rapid City Rush playing in Ft. Wayne, Indiana playing the Komets and league power house Colorado taking on the Arizona Sundogs who finished last in the South last season.

Overall, the 66 game season will kick off on October 15 and will finish up on March 27. The Playoffs will have everyone except the last place teams in both conferences make the post-season which will begin in early April (More on why I don't like this idea in a later commentary).

RGV Forward Zak Mcclellan enters the CHL Chat Room

Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees forward Zak Mcclellan has entered the CHL Chat Room as the Killer Bees forward talks about his life on and off the ice and getting ready for the upcoming All Star Game next week in Laredo. Currently, he has 17 points through the halfway through the season and is a big time forward who likes to use his height to take advantage of his competition. He also talks about some stuff away from the ice, including who the teams best cook, and some interesting comments about practice.

From the Central Hockey League website. www.centralhockeyleague.com

What advice would you give to a youth hockey player?

Advice I would give a youth hockey player... hmm I would say play as many sports as you can. I think one thing parents sometimes think is to dedicate themselves or they will never make it as a pro. And I think if you dedicate your life and time to one sport too young, you really run the risk of burnout. So my advice would be to enjoy other sports along with hockey, work hard on your hockey skills during the year, and then enjoy something like soccer or basketball, whatever you enjoy in the off season. As far as with one skill though I would say skating, no matter how good you are. you can always get faster and stronger with your skates.

What is like playing with the big Joel Irving?

Joel is a big human that's for sure. Its good, he's hilarious too so that's makes it fun to have in the dressing room. He's also played at almost every level of pro, so he knows a lot of situations, and helps us college guys a lot.

What team do you think is the best so far in the Southern Conference this year?

I think the best team so far in the South is maybe Allen, they are big, strong and have a lot of good talent.

Who is the best cook and the best eater?

Wylie Rogers is a good cook!!! He is for sure in a really good zone when he gets in the kitchen. He cooks up some really good dishes! The best eater is a toss up, a couple of the boys can really put some food down; I'd say Goeckner-Zoller might be at the top of that.

What do you hat the most about practice?

That's a tough question, I'd have to say what I don't like is when you get repetitive and can fall in the funk of the same drills. That can really get to feeling like your a robot, and make practice not as much fun as when your doing new drills now and again.

Who is the player you have played with at some point that you have learned the most from?

Well I played with some really good players in college, so I can't really pin point one. But I can say that I learned a lot of really good things while going to Michigan State just playing day in and day out with some really good talent. I was able to be on great teams where a lot of the guys have gone on to play in the NHL & AHL and you can learn a lot by just watching them in practice and working with them. So I'm very fortunate about that.

Has living in South Texas been better or worse then you thought it would be?

South Texas has been a fun experience, Its definitely a lot different from Michigan. I like the weather and the sunshine, but really do miss the change of season. I'm happy to be able to be for a while but can't lie, think my home is always Michigan.
