Central Hockey League Week Ahead for 2/22-26

Despite seeing both the Allen Americans going to the Shootout for the 4th time in the last 6 games. It was the Brahmas who the shootout and the game for the 2nd time in 11 days and the 3rd straight time as the Brahmas have owned the Americans as of late by pulling off their 3rd straight victory over the Rivals from Colin County in a 2-1 game where Mark Guggenberger had another outstanding performance by making 26 of 27 saves to earn his 7th straight win including giving up a goal or less in 6 of those games that earned him the CHL Goalie of the Week for the week of February 13-19.

Tulsa also had their game go to Overtime that saw them lost 2-1 to Ft. Wayne that saw their gap between them and 5th Place Rio Grande Valley grow to 5 points with 2 games in hand (Tulsa with 17 GR, RGV with 15 GR) this season.

As for the rest of the week, the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees has a chance to climb back in the race as they sit 5 points back with 15 games left in the regular season as they will face South Texas Rival Laredo Bucks and then a pair of games against the Turner Conference Bottom Feeder Bloomington Blaze on Friday & Saturday and hope that Guggenberger and the Rock Hard Defense will be playing the Brahmas for a 3 game weekend starting in Tulsa on Friday.

Then coming back to Dallas to play on Saturday & Sunday as the Killer Bees have one of their better chances to close the gap with Tulsa for the fourth & final playoff spot in the Berry Conference.

With the entire league coming down to the final 15 games. We could have a battle possibly brewing for the 2nd spot as many thought the Americans & Thunder would comfortably have 1st Round Home Ice while battling for home ice advantage in the Southern Conference & taking on the Evansville Ice Men & Ft. Wayne Komets for home ice throughout the entire playoffs.

However, with the Brahmas winning 7 in a row and Mark Guggenberger starting to heat up in goal, it could have the Americans sweating (Not heavily yet) about a possible battle between the DFW Rivals for 1st Round Home Ice. One big advantage for the Americans is that Allen has 2 games in hand where they can easily extend & protect their lead.

Texas will be looking to bank on a 6 game homestand that will begin Saturday Night with a pair of games against the Tulsa Oilers on Saturday & Sunday. They will also play a pair of games against Rio Grande Valley as well as Missouri & Laredo to finish their final extended homestand of the regular season.

Laredo use strong Special Teams to blast the Brahmas

The Laredo Bucks maybe near the Bottom of the Central Hockey League's Berry Conference for most of the year, but they didn't play like it last night when they hosted the Texas Brahmas who are fighting for 3rd Place with the Tulsa Oilers.

A strong special teams game which included going  3-for-4 on the Power Play and the team also added a shorthanded goal near the start of the game which launched the Bucks Night. The likes of Neil Trimm & Ryan Sparling helped lead the way as 9 players were able to record at least a point in the victory while Bucks Goalie Torrie Jung stopped all 29 shots to get the easy win in the process.

For Laredo this was the great start they were looking for their current 4 game home stand as the Bucks & Brahmas will play again tomorrow night and the Wichita Thunder coming up on Saturday Night. For Texas after playing the Bucks tomorrow night, their South Texas Road Trip continues against the RGV Killer Bees on Saturday Night in another big battle for the 3rd & 4th Place Spots in the Berry Conference. After losing to Tulsa on Tuesday Night, the Killer Bees can't afford to lose even more ground on both the Brahmas & the Tulsa Oilers in the playoff race.

While the battle for the 3rd & 4th Place Spots is getting heated up, both the Allen Americans & Wichita Thunder who are gunning for the Top Spot will be on different parts of the region. The Americans will begin a weekend series against the Tulsa Oilers from the Allen Event Center, while the Thunder will make their way South to play the RGV Killer Bees on Friday, then up to DFW to play the Texas Brahmas on Saturday Night in what should be a great with both playoff races in focus.

Game Report from the Central Hockey League Website

From Laredo, Texas: The Laredo Bucks are dealing with two very hot properties, goaltender Torre Jung, and the duo helped lead the way on Wednesday Night as the Bucks pounded the Texas Brahmas 6-0 at the Laredo Energy Arena.

June remained one of the better goaltenders in the league in recent weeks making 29 saves and earning his second shutout in his last three decisions. Jung is 4-0-1 in his last five decisions allowing just 7 goals over that stretch (he is 14-11-1 on the season).

Trimm extended his league active best point streak to eight games accumulating 13 points (2-11=13) over that span.

Texas played Adam Avramenko in net, just signed this week after Steve Silverthon left to play in Europe, and he struggled in his debut with the Brahmas allowing six scores on 30 shots.

A shorthanded goal from Justin Styffe got the Bucks rolling just over two minutes into the game and it turned out to be all Laredo needed. It was the first winning goal of the season for Styffe and his sixth goal overall.

Later in the first, David Inman connected on the first of three power play scores for Laredo giving plenty of cushion for Jung to work his magic the rest of the night.

The second period was the busiest for Jung, 13 saves, but it was also the most productive for the home team who struck three times. Ryan Sparling and Trimm scored PP Goals and Rusty Masters added an even strength strike making the score 5-0 after 40 minutes.

Early in the third, Matt Boyd added to the total with his 10th goal of the season and Bucks would cost from there in a fast moving final frame.

Matt Pierce added a pair of assists helping set up the Bucks Cause.

Laredo finished the game 3/4 on the power play with the man advantage and stopped all five PP Chances for the visitors.

The Brahmas lost for the second time in their last three games and were shutout for the fourth time this season. Texas' offense has struggled recently scoring just five times in the last four games.

The defense has been good through as the six goals allowed tonight by Texas matches what they had allowed in their previous four games combined.

The two teams will battle again on Friday Night in Laredo.

Texas still leads the season series winning five of the eight games so far.

Central Hockey League Rosters

With the Central Hockey League season beginning Tomorrow night, here's a look at the Southwest Teams as the final rosters are getting ready to come out. In addition to the rosters, several major rivalries are going to dominate headlines on the opening weekend, like the Brahmas & Americans at the Allen Events Center where the Americans are going to raise the CHL Southern Conference Championship Banner on October 15 and the South Texas Rivalry between the Laredo Bucks and Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees.

Other major rivalries include the Tulsa Oilers and Wichita Thunder and the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs VS. Mississippi Riverkings which will be a home-and-home matchup with the Mudbugs hosting the first leg on Friday Night.

Some of the big news from over the off-season includes the return of Chad Woolard who has had the nickname "Mr. Brahma" for his great play in the past with the team when it was located at the Ft. Worth Civic Center in the team's early history. This past season he was with the Corpus Christi Icerays in their final year in the Central Hockey League before leaving for the North American Hockey League to become a Junior Team.

Other teams he's played with include the Mississippi Riverkings and Quad City Mallards in the CHL. As well as some time in the ECHL with the Greensboro Generals and Jackson Bandits. As well as a short Stint in the AHL with the Utah Grizzlies, St. John's Maple Leafs and San Antonio Rampage as well. He has never suited up in an NHL Game in his career.

As for players moving, Allen Americans Defensemen Brandon Struab has signed a contract with the Detroit Red Wings AHL Affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins recently.

Other Americans players that were involved in the CHL Southern Conference Championship include the offensive trio of Nino Musitelli, Justin Bowers and Bruce Graham who all combined for 215 points last season during the regular season and then 78 points combined in the post-season where the Americans came up 2 wins shy of a CHL Presidents Cup Title in their very season of professional hockey in Allen.

Here's a look at the schedule for the opening weekend of the regular season involving the CHL Southwest Teams. A lot of rivalries will be going, including Texas VS. Allen, RG Valley VS. Laredo and Tulsa VS. Wichita on Friday Night. I will also show links to the rosters for all the teams. Laredo & Rio Grande Valley will battle for Mayors Challenge Cup

In an effort to help spice up the Texas Border rivalry, the mayor of Laredo has announced an agreement between the Laredo Bucks & Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees in an event called the "Cricket's Mayor Cup" which was announced in a press conference with Laredo Mayor Raul G. Salinas. Now will we need to hear a response from the mayor of Hidalgo Mayor David Franz will need to accept the challenge before the event can take place.

This is an interesting idea to spice up hockey in the Southwest. Hopefully both teams will team up to help build up one of the most unlikely hockey rivalries in North America.


Press Release from the Central Hockey League

From Laredo, Texas: Mayor of Laredo Raul G. Salinas, conjunction with the Central Hockey League's Laredo Bucks, challenged the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees' Monday to participate in the first ever Cricket Mayor's Cup for the 2010-2011 season. The challenge was made in front of the media and a number of fans during a press conference at Laredo's City Hall.

"We want to boost our Bucks rivalry with the Bees to the next level and get the city of Hidalgo involved as well," Salinas said. "We are proud of the Bucks and went to challenge the city of Hidalgo and the Bees during the season to see who earns the most points between the two teams. The team who earns the most points head-to-head against each other will win the Cricket Cup."

If Hidalgo Mayor John David Franz and the Killer Bees accept the challenge more details of the Cricket's Mayor's Cup will be announced.

The winning team will pick a local charity to donate $5,000 to on behalf of Cricket.

"We will be waiting for the city of Hidalgo and the Killer Bees response to the challenge. I think it will be a great addition to the ice rivalry."

The Bucks and Killer Bees will meet 16 times this season with eight taking place at Laredo Energy Center and eight at the State Farm Arena in Hidalgo. In seven seasons facing off against each other the Bucks lead the all time regular season series with the Bees 64-21-8, including 11-0-3 last season.

"We went to Cricket Wireless with the idea of the Mayor's Cup and they were very excited to get involved with this project. Cricket is well represented in Laredo and in the Valley and make a great partner of the Cup", said Salinas.

Q&A with Laredo Bucks Head Coach Terry Ruskowski

In the 2nd edition of "They Said It" Laredo Bucks Head Coach Terry Ruskowski did the CHL Q&A answering questions on topics from Characterizing last season, looking to get affiliated with the NHL's Minnesota Wild and the AHL's Houston Aeros to help with recruiting and to help improve the quality of players for the Bucks.

The last couple of years have been filed with playoff disappointments and teams that have been missing a critical piece or two to have a shot of winning the Ray Miron Presidents Cup Title.

Even though the Bucks have been a regular playoff team, the 2007-2008 season was the most successful when they won the Southeast Division Title then got within one win of the Ray Miron Presidents Cup Championship Series when they swept the Odessa Jackalopes in the Conference Semifinals then lost to the eventual champion Arizona Sundogs in the Southern Conference Final.

Here's the Q&A

Looking back at last season, how would you characterize the play of your last team?

I think it was a real gutsy effort from my team. We went through a lot of adversity with J.P. Levasseur getting called up in December and never coming back down and we had a lot of injuries last season. There was one point during the season where I walked into our locker room and we had four guys on crutches wearing suits. I have to give the team a lot of credit, they played shorthanded quite a bit but came up large when we had to. The team showed a whole lot of heart and character and persevered to even get us to the playoffs and get the third seed was a huge credit to them and I'm really proud of their efforts.


You seemed to find a late season gem in Pier Pelletier, how good can he become and do you see anything in him that reminds you of some great goaltenders of the past for the Bucks?

When Pelletier first came in we didn't get a lot of ice time until January and we went with another goaltender. But once we got Pelletier the reigns back he drove this team in the right direction and played absolutely brilliant in the playoffs, just brilliant. I liked him so much that he was my first signing after the season was over. The kid has a very bright future, just not with us, but he has a very future ahead of him.


With the loss of the Corpus Christi Icerays in South Texas, the Bucks will have to the hit the road more then in past seasons, does this factor into the type of player you recruit knowing that road points are going to be so valuable?

Right now you try to recruit the best players possible at every position. Players always know that road points are tough to get and this season will be no different. I do like the road schedule was put together this season. We will have some rest between games on the road and I hope that makes a difference to pick up those points.


On the recruiting trail, you have found some hidden jewels in the past, who are you most excited about for this upcoming season?

I like Joe Scali out of Cornell. I've heard a lot of good things about him. He has good speed, he's physical. He scored in junior and at Cornell his defense was tremendous and he killed a ton of penalties. I like Kroger, the kid who played in the best league in Austria. He has good size, he skates really well and he's a guy that we are looking to contribute. There's a couple of others who we are looking at to make a difference.


Serge Dube returns to the team, what does he bring your club both on and off the ice?

Serge is a leader. He's a guy who's won championships with, he's a guy who smart with the puck and controls it very well. If anyone has troubles on the team they go to Serge and he gives them the right advice. He's coached the kid's here in Laredo the last couple of years and I think he knows what it takes to be a good coach and I know that he will be a huge factor for our team to get to the next level.


Although 8 of the 9 teams make it to the postseason, how important will it be to finish high in the conference for home ice advantage?

That's whats been a detriment to us the last two years is that we didn't have the home ice advantage against Odessa in 2009 or Allen last year. It really hurt us a lot not having home ice advantage in those two series. Our goal every season is to win every single game we play. We are going to play like we want every game and get as high in the standings as possible so we can get home ice. Having home ice is good for the players, the fans and the city of Laredo.


The Bucks and the Americans played a great series in last year's playoffs and Allen should have a good club again, how do you feel you match up with the defending conference champions?

I'm still not finished recruiting yet. We need to get better to match up with Allen, they had a very good team last year and should again this year. I'm hoping this season we will have fewer injuries so we can compete better. It's going to be a huge challenge in the league this year because there are so many good teams. If you don't play well then you are not going to win.


After coaching the Bucks for nearly a decade, how have the players changed over time?

I don't know if the players have changed a lot. I think they have more opportunities then they did before. Europe is always a good opportunity for the players. There are guys now who are just happy to be here and guys who want to work hard to get to the next level. I want the players who want to get to the next level on my team not the guys who are just happy to be here.


The Bucks have strong affiliations in the past with AHL and NHL clubs, what advantage did or didn't that give your team?

Recruiting wist it's a huge advantage. It gives players a chance to get called up more, and for us we will get good players sent to us. We are working a little bit with the Houston Aeros now where we are sending our guys to their camp. It's nice working with them, hopefully down the road we can get an affiliation with Houston.

Central Hockey League to Name Conferences after League Legends

The Central Hockey League announced today the official names of the Northern & Southern Conferences as they will be named after legends from the CHL & IHL as the Northern Conference will be named the Turner Conference after Joseph Turner, while the Southern Conference will be named the Berry Conference after the N. Thomas Berry.

N. Thomas Berry has been involved in the sport of hockey for nearly half a century as Commissioner Emeritus for the CHL and has been involved. He spent 13 years with the IHL Serving as their commissioner from 1989-1994 as he added 7 teams under his term. He currently resides in Indianapolis has served in many capacities covering the on-ice officiating all the way to running ind. teams. He was also involved in the short lived World Hockey Association (WHA) with the Indianapolis Racers.

Joesph Turner who was a goaltender from Windsor, Ontario who played for the Red Wings before WW2 also served with the US Army. He was later killed in December of 1944 during a battle in Belgium. He was an amateur goalie in the old Michigan-Ontario Amateur league which was the predictor of the International Hockey League playing for teams both in Detroit and Windsor. The Turner Cup was later named after him shortly after WW2 ended when the IHL was officially formed.

The Joseph Turner Trophy will serve as the Northern Conference Champions, while the N. Thomas Berry Trophy will be crowned as Southern Conference Champions.

2010-2011 Central Hockey League Schedule Announced

The schedule for the 2010-2011 season was just released moments ago as the CHL Regular Season will get underway on October 15 to start the 66 game season. One of the major highlights of opening weekend will be the D/FW Rivalry as the Allen Americans & Texas Brahmas will kick off with a Weekend series in Allen.

Other interesting matchups involving the Southwest Teams during opening weekend will be the South Texas Rivalry as the Laredo Bucks & Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees will hook up from Rio Grande City.

As for teams other in Odessa, Bossier-Shreveport and Tulsa. The Jackalopes who were ousted for the 2nd straight year in the Southern Conference Final will open up against the Missouri Mavericks and Quad City Mallards. This is part of a busy road schedule early on where 8 of the first 10 games will be on the road, the only exception will be a pair of home games against the Laredo Bucks on October 28 & 30.

Bossier-Shreveport will open with a home-and-home against the Mississippi Riverkings while the Tulsa Oilers will do the same thing against the Wichita Thunder on opening weekend.

Just like in previous years, a majority of the games will be on the weekends early on in the season. Then later on the league adds more week night games as we close in on the playoffs which begin in late March.

Some other interesting matchups starting out will be the Rapid City Rush playing in Ft. Wayne, Indiana playing the Komets and league power house Colorado taking on the Arizona Sundogs who finished last in the South last season.

Overall, the 66 game season will kick off on October 15 and will finish up on March 27. The Playoffs will have everyone except the last place teams in both conferences make the post-season which will begin in early April (More on why I don't like this idea in a later commentary).

Unlikely Hero gives lift, sends series to Game 7 tonight

An unlikely hero in Matt Radoslovich who has scored just 6 points (2G 4A) all year long scored a critical goal to send the Americans to a Game 7 tonight against the Laredo Bucks tonight where the winner will face the Odessa Jackalopes for the Southern Conference Final. Allen is looking to be the D/FW's main hope for hockey glory in Texas with the Dallas Stars missing out of the playoffs and the Texas Brahmas getting eliminated from the playoffs earlier this week.

Tonight's Game 7 will be in Allen where a huge crowd is expected to help the Americans to win the team's first ever playoff series and looking to make history as the 1st expansion team to win the Presidents Cup Championship in Central Hockey League History.

From Allen, Texas: With the home crowd behind them, the Allen Americans beat the Laredo Bucks 3-2 at the Allen Event Center. The best-of-7 Conference Semifinals series is tied at 3-3 with the deciding game tomorrow night at the Allen Event Center.

Neither team could generate a goal in the opening frame, which marked the first time the teams headed to the locker room in a 0-0 deadlock. Laredo had the first 4 shots in the game, but Allen picked up the pace and ended the period with a 17-9 shot advantage.

Forward Nino Musitelli gave Allen a 1-0 lead 4:02 into the middle frame. The Americans, already playing aggressively, cranked up the intensity after the goal. Laredo's Todd Griffith responded with his 8th point of the series to even the score at 1-1. The 2nd period ended with the score knotted at 1-1.

Hungry for a win, the Americans scored first in the 3rd period, too. Defensemen Jordie Benn found forward Matt Radoslovich in front of Pier-Olivier Pelletier at 5:28. Pelletier turned away Radoslovich's initial shot, but the forward pounded the rebound into the net to put Allen up 2-1. Seven minute later, Justin Bowers poked the puck around Pelletier's pad on a breakaway to increase the Americans' lead to two goals. Darryl Smith brought the Bucks within 1 again at 15:38 on the power play, but Allen refused to let them get back in the game.

With 1:03 remaining in the third, captain Jarret Lukin was called for a tripping penalty. Laredo called a timeout and returned with 6 skaters on the ice. Despite the two-man advantage, the Bucks could not get another puck past Americans backstop Chris Whitley. The Final score was 3-2.

Whitley made 22 saves tonight, while Pelletier stopped 40 shots.

Allen will host the can't-miss game of the season tomorrow, April 7 at 7:30 PM. Winner plays the Odessa Jackalopes in the Southern Conference Final which should get underway this weekend.

Laredo Runs away with Game 5, Takes 3-2 Series Lead

From Laredo, Texas: It doesn't seem that long ago that Brent Cullaton was a championship hero for the Laredo Bucks and after coming out of retirement to join this year's post-season edition, the veteran is up to his old tricks.

Cullaton scored a pair of goals and had an assist in Laredo's 5-1 victory over the Allen Americans in Game five of the best-of-7 semifinal series that now gives the Bucks a 3-2 series lead. Game Six will be back in Allen on Tuesday Night.

Laredo's Rookie Goaltender Pell Pelletier had another solid performance making 41 saves including 19 in the 2nd period.

Jeff Bes and Darryl Smith each had a pair of goals and Sylvain Deschatelets had three points (1G 2A) in the 2nd period alone.

Bruce Graham scored the Americans lone goal in what was the most lopsided game of the series so far.

The Series will return North to Allen for Game 6 back on Tuesday Night with a possible Game 7 being on Wednesday Night if necessary.

The Laredo Bucks beat the Allen Americans 4-3 Thursday Night in Game four of the Central Hockey League Southern Conference Semifinals at Laredo Energy Arena. The best of 7 series is tied at two games apiece with a pivotal game five in Laredo.

Pier Pelletier stopped 37 of 40 shots he faced and Todd Griffith had two goals to help the Bucks snap a five-game home playoff losing streak. The Bucks last home playoff win was April 25, 2008 against the Arizona Sundogs.

Laredo was out-shot in the game 40-28.

The Americans jumped out on top very quickly as they tallied a shorthanded goal just 1:05 into the contest. Jarret Larkin jammed in a rebound from the bottom of the left faceoff circle to pick up his 1st goal of the playoffs.

The Bucks would strike back for two goals in a span of 10 minutes to take a 2-1 lead after the first period. Laredo improves to 10-8 in game four of a playoff series.

Brent Cullaton would tie the game at 1-1 at the 3:27 mark of the first when he streaked down the left side of the ice and hammered in a wrist shot from the top of the circle. The goal was Cullaton's first tally of the CHL Playoffs since April 27, 2006 where the Bucks won game two of the CHL President's Cup Final over Bossier-Shreveport. Cullaton has 13 career CHL Playoff Goals.

Laredo took a 2-1 lead with 6:33 left in the first period when Griffith jammed in a rebound from the bottom of the left circle to pick up his third goal of the playoffs. The Bucks were out-shot 15-12 in the first period.

Laredo took a 3-1 lead as they scored their first power play goal of the series 1:20 into the 2nd period. Neil Trimm jammed in a shot from the right side of the crease to pick up his third goal of the playoffs. Trimm scored a goal in games one and two.

Allen would cut the lead to 3-2 when Erik Adams scored on a laser slap shot from the top of the right circle 4:57 into the 2nd. The strike was Adam's third in the series and his second in as many games.

The Bucks would increase their lead to 4-2 with 3:39 left in the 2nd period when they struck on the power-play again. Griffith scored his 2nd goal of the game and his fourth of the playoffs with a rifle from the slot. Griffith now has six career playoff goals. Each team put up 11 shots in the 2nd period.

Colton Yellow Horn cut the Bucks lead to 4-3 with 6:02 in the third period when he scored from the bottom of the right circle. Yellow Horn now has two goals in the series. The Americans pulled their goaltender for the final 1:48 of the third period to try and tie the game but Laredo held on to tie the series. Laredo was out-shot 14-5 in the third period. Chris Whitley suffered the loss as he stopped 24 of 28 shots in the contest.

With both teams tied at 2-2, the series will go at least 6 games with each team playing at least one more home game in this series. Game 5 will be in Laredo tomorrow night while Game 6 will be in Allen on April 6.

American Superstars Take a 2-1 Series Lead

The Allen Americans dominated the Laredo Bucks 4-1 on the road to take a 2-1 series lead in the Conference Semifinals. The lead is the first series lead in the team history for the expansion club.

For the first time in the series, Allen kept Laredo off the scoreboard in the opening period. The Americans scored two goals in an 11-shot frame for both teams. 2010 CHL All-Star Starter Justin Bowers redirected a shot to give Allen the first goal of the game at 7:17. Four minutes later Ryan Fairbarn gave the Americans a two goal cushion.

Laredo cut Allen's lead in half 6:53 into the 2nd period. Forward Todd Griffith scored on a backhander to make it 2-1. The heat between the clubs continued to escalate until Allen agitator Mike Salekin and Griffith dropped the gloves immediately after a faceoff four minutes later. Salekin landed five quick right punches before sitting in the sin bin. Any momentum the Bucks got in the middle frame was squashed when Captain Jarret Lukin found Erik Adams rushing to the net. Adams beat Laredo backstop Pier-Olivier Pelletier for his 19th career playoff point.

Allen started the third with a 3-1 lead and did not give Laredo any opportunities. The Americans limited the Bucks to three shots in the final period. With 32.8 seconds remaining in the game, Justin Bowers sealed the deal with an empty-net goal. The final score was 4-1.

The Allen Penalty Killing unit continued to shutout the Bucks, killing off all four Laredo Power Plays Tonight. Chris Whitley made 24 saves, while Pelletier made 29 stopped 29 pucks.

Allen uses physical a game to win first ever Playoff Game & Tie Series

The Allen Americans played a physical game to beat Laredo 3-2 and earn their first franchise playoff win. The Conference Semifinals series of the 2010 Ray Miron President's Cup Playoffs is tied at 1-1.

Laredo jumped out to an early lead after Todd Griffith backhanded a shot into the cage less then three minutes into the game. The Americans had the score tied up at 10:10, but the referee waived off the goal due to an interference penalty by Allen's Captain, Jerry Lukin. The Americans fought off 4 Laredo Power Plays in the 1st period and Allen had the extra-man advantage twice. There were 16 combined penalty minutes in the opening frame, which is the same amount that was called in last night's contest. Allen went into the first intermission 1-0.

The Americans came out strong in the 2nd period, scoring three straight goals to take a 3-1 lead. Just 1:16 into the frame, Colton Yellow Horn made the Bucks pay after they could not clear the traffic in front of the net. Yellow Horn's tally was the first career playoff goal. Then, forward Nino Musitelli skated into the Bucks zone and went top shelf to give Allen's its first lead of the night four minutes later. The goal was Musitelli's first career playoff goal as well. With 7:38 remaining in the middle frame, Musiteelli's first career playoff goal as well. With 7:38 remaining in the middle frame, Musitelli's poked a rebound around Buck Pier-Olivier's pad on the power play to gave Allen a two goal cushion.

Laredo staged a comeback in the third but could not find the firepower to get past Chris Whitley more then once. Ryan Lehr brought Laredo within one at 5:48. The Bucks put on the extra attacker with 1:12 remaining in the game as the crowd rose to their feet cheering them on its home team. The final score was 3-2.

Whitley recorded his first career playoff win, stopping 30 shots this evening. Pelletier made 21 shots. The teams combined for 64 career penalty minutes in the game, and Allen stopped all nine Laredo Power Plays.

Allen Continues its best-of-7 series in Laredo on March 30, April 1 and April 3. If the series is forced to six games, Allen will host Laredo April 6 at 7:30 PM.

Laredo D-Men spark 3rd period comeback against the Americans

The Laredo Bucks beat the Allen Americans 4-3 Friday night in one of the Central Hockey League's Southern Conference Semifinals at the Allen Event Center. The Bucks lead the best of 7 series' one to nothing with game two on Saturday Night.

Laredo trailed 3-2 entering the third period but struck twice in the final frame to improve to 15-4 all-time in game one of a playoff series. Pier Pelletier stopped 33 of 36 shots he faced including all in the third period as he won his pro playoff debut. Going back to the regular season Pelletier is 10-0-2 in his last 12 games.

Neil Trimm gave Laredo a 4-3 lead with 10:50 left in the game when he scored on a slap shot from the top of the slot to pick up his first career CHL Playoff Goal.

Mike Looby scored his 2nd goal of the night just 2:46 into the third period to tie the contest at 3-3. Looby entered Friday's game with just one career CHL Playoff Goal. The Americans had an empty net for the final 1:09 of the game but could not tie it as Pelletier made several key stops to hang on for the win. Allen was 28-1 after two periods during the regular season.

Laredo would battle back and take a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes of play. Looby tied the game at 1-1 at the 9:32 mark of the first when he scored from the top of the right circle off of an Allen Turnover. The strike was Looby's second career CHL Playoff Goal.

The Bucks took a 2-1 lead with just 42.5 seconds left in the first period. Jarred Mohr picked up a loose puck in Allen's zone and found a wide-open Darryl Smith in front of the net who scored on a backhander. The Goal was Smith's sixth career CHL Playoff Goal.

Laredo was out shot 11-10 in the 1st period. Allen would strike twice in a span of one minute to take a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes.

Tobias Whelan tied the game at 2-2 at the 5:31 mark of the 2nd period on a broken power play in the Bucks Defensive zone. Just one minute later Eric Adams put the Americans up 3-2 when he jammed in a rebound into the back of the net after a breakaway attempt by Bryce Graham.

The Bucks out shot the Americans 13-9 in the 2nd period but were out shot in the game 36-32. Chris Whitley suffered the loss for Allen as he set aside 28 of 31 shots he faced. Jeff Bes picked up an assist in the game to score his 100th career CHL Point.

Central Hockey League Conference #2 VS. #3 Semifinals Series Schedules

As the Central Hockey League Play In Rounds are going on as the winners will take on the Odessa Jackalopes and the Rapid City Rush.

The other 2 series are now set and we will show you the schedules for the 2nd and 3rd seeded teams in both the Northern Conference as League Powerhouse Colorado Eagles will take on the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs. Colorado has been the team to beat in the regular season in recent years as the Eagles have lost in the Championship Series big time by the Arizona Sundogs in 2008 and the Texas Brahmas last year.

If the Eagles get back to the Presidents Cup Final for the 3rd straight year, the Eagles will look to put the disappointment of the last 2 years behind them as the team has the experience like Ed Mcgrane and Kevin Ulanski who tons of big game experience.

Bossier-Shreveport haven't been past the Conference Semifinals since 2007 as the Mudbugs have been sweeped out of the playoffs the last 2 seasons as they were shocked by the Brahmas in 2008 after finishing with the top seed in the regular season.

Then last year, the Mudbugs lost in a 4 game sweep of Colorado where they lost all 4 games by a single goal, including 2 games in OT in last year's Northern Conference SF. Bossier-Shreveport will look for revenge as the Mudbugs and Eagles will face off in the postseason for the 2nd straight year.

Meanwhile in the South, its the league's biggest surprise this season as the Americans had one of the best seasons by a first year team in league history after winning an impressive 42 games this season, and will be looking to perhaps be the biggest challenger to the Odessa Jackalopes in the Southern Conference Playoffs. The Americans will be taking on the Laredo Bucks who's looking to get back to the Conference Finals after losing to Odessa in the Conference Semifinals last year.

Laredo is looking to continue its great end of the regular season as the Bucks were able to pull away from the Brahmas for the 3rd spot. If the Bucks win their 1st Round Series against Allen, Odessa could be interesting as the last 3 head-to-head games went to a SO.

The City of Laredo, Texas, along with the Laredo Bucks officially announced Wednesday that the Laredo Entrainment Center has become the Laredo Energy Arena effective immediately.

The announcement was made to the media and a large number of corporate partners and fans at a press conference at the main entrance of the arena.

Bucks majority owner Glenn Hart is also the President of the Laredo Energy Company. Laredo Energy signed a four year naming rights agreement with options for extension with the City of Laredo. This is the first time in Team History that the building has another name besides the Laredo Entrainment Center

"We know most arenas and stadiums across the country have est. names associated with their facility," said Mayor Raul G. Salinas. "The City of Laredo was waiting for the right corp. partner to be able to bring their company's good name together with our great facility; that is exactly what we have now with Laredo Energy and now, the Laredo Energy Arena. Laredo Energy is a strong, stable company that has est. ties, local support and has demonstrated in faith of our city with their continued community involvement. Additionally, I am also very pleased that the city's beautiful name is still in the new name of the arena; people will still think of Laredo when they think of quality, exciting and affordable entertainment at the Laredo Energy Arena," Salinas Concluded.

The 178,000 SQ. Foot Laredo Energy Arena opened in 2002 and can seat up to 8,000 people for hockey, and up to 10,000 for concerts. It has 14 luxury suites, four meeting rooms and a private club for season ticket holders.

State of the Team

Also on Wednesday Hart Issued a "State of the Bucks" address to those in attendance and spoke about the future of the 8 year old team.

Hart said the Bucks have four years on their lease with the arena and intend to complete the term of the agreement in Laredo, and hopefully for many years to come.

"Our Bucks season ticket holders and corporate partners are the major reasons we have been so successful in the City of Laredo and in the surrounding communities," said Hart. "Just like any other business the Bucks have been hurt by the economy but that won't stop us from continuing to provide great family entertainment for the people of Laredo and the surrounding area."

The Bucks are considered here in Laredo without the help of each and everyone of the residents in this great city," Hart Continued. "I remember back to our championship back in 2004 when we had 8,002 people in the building and another 3,000 people outside watching on big screens. We need your help to win. Let's pack this place like we used to and win our third President's Cup Championship.

The South Texas Squad was led by the Sherwood/TPS most Valuable player, rookie forward Sean Muncy from RGV who finished the game with 2 goals and 2 assists leading all players with 4 points. The CHL All Star player that earned the their MVP was Odessa Jackalopes goaltender Joel Martin who stopped 27 of 28 shots in the first period and helped the CHL Team go into the 1st intermission with a 2-1 lead.

The game featured a team of South Texas Players (From the Laredo Bucks, RGV Killer Bees and the Corpus Christi Icerayz) against a team from the rest of the league.

The star of the early going was Martin who leads the CHL with a 2.26 GAA and it showed why last night. He made three huge saves in the games first 4 minutes and then at the 14:50 mark, robbed hometown hero's Jeff Bes and Darryl Smith on back to back straight shots. The South Texas Team registered 11 of the game's first 12 shots.

It was the 13th shot of the however that struck gold as the Colorado Eagles Connection gave the CHL a 1-0 lead. Defensemen Aaron Schneekloth scored the goal, as he drove to the net and teammate Riley Nelson fed him for his first All Star Goal and fifth All Star Point in his 4th career CHL All Star Game. Nelson and Kevin Ulanski drew the assists at the 6:09 mark of the 1st period.

The CHL made it 2-0 on a laser shot from Arizona Sundogs defensemen Jon Landry, playing in his first career All Star Game, that RGV Goalie Andy Franck high on the glove side. For Franck, it was his third straight All Star Game (a league record). Allen's two all stars, Bruce Graham and Justin Bowers earned the assists at the 8:05 mark of the game.

Martin seemed invincible until there was a minute and a half in the 1st period left in the period where he turned away 25 shots until Darryl Smith (Laredo) beat him just under the crossbar and made it 2-1 CHL heading into the 1st intermission. Assisting on the goal was Corpus Christi teammates Justin Quenneville and Kyle Peto on the goal.

The score ended 2-1 after 1 with Martin Stealing the show early on in the game, some of which were great acrobatic saves getting fans out of the seats. The 27 saves were a CHL Record by South Texas set a CHL/WPHL Record since the merger.

South Texas tied the game early on in the 2nd period when Corpus Christi's Jereme Tendler found a tiny opening top shelf beating Bossier-Shreveport's Ken Carroll making the score 2-2. Ryan Garbutt drew the lone assist on the goal at 2 minutes into the 2nd period.

Shortly thereafter, the South Texas Team took the lead thanks to a nifty play by Evan Schwabe tuck a shot under and over Ken Carroll that eventually went off an opponent stick and across the goal line. Peto earned the assist for his 2nd point of the night.

Franck left the game at the midway point of the game after stopping 14 of 16 shots and sitting in line for the win midway through the game.

Before the end of the 2nd period, RGV's Sean Muncy scored his first of two on the night, assisted by Peto and Quenneville for their 2nd assists of the night, at the 18:33 mark of the 2nd, South Texas took a 4-2 lead going into the 2nd intermission.

BOS's Ken Carroll stopped 13 of 16 shots in the 2nd period.

Then in the 3rd period, the flood gates opened for South Texas in the final frame where a total 7 goals were scored in the game. Muncy got the scoring going and the eventually game winner just 1:21 into the 3rd period with Grant Gockner-Zoller made it 5-2. That assists was the first of 3 points in the period for the Killer Bees Forward.

South Texas started stretching the lead midway through the 3rd period as a one timer from Jesse Bennefield made the score 6-2 with Gockner-Zoller scoring his 2nd assists.

Garbutt got into the goal scoring with a goal at 11:10 mark as the blowout was on. Quenneville and Muncy drew the assists on the goal that made it 7-2 South Texas. The interesting thing about Garbutt's goal that it came on the games only power play from T.J. Craig who had the only penalty of the game.

The teams exchanged goals as the game wound down with Craig and Jeff Christian of the Missouri Mavericks scoring goals for the CHL and Laredo's Jeff Bes and Grant Gockner-Zoller scoring for South Texas.

Kevin Nastiuk of the Corpus Christi Icerayz finished his half game with 19 saves on 21 shots and Rapid City's Danny Battochio finished his period of play turning aside 14 of 19 shots.

Peto (0G 3A), Quenneville (0G 3A) and Gockner-Zoller (1G 2A) all finished the game with 3 points.

Just like the final score, the SOG reflected the game as South Texas out shot the CHL 63-37.

Look for Twitter updates during tonight's Central Hockey League All Star Game as the game will take place from the Laredo Entrainment Center in Laredo Texas. This year's format has the South Texas All Stars which is a team comprising of the Corpus Christi Icerayz, Laredo Bucks and Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees against a team from the rest of the league.

Tonight's game will start at 7:00 PM with a pre game festivities including a special roster intros and a ceremonial puck dropping by special guests. As for tonight's Captains, Jeff Bes will captain the South Texas Team while Colorado's Riley Nelson will head the CHL All Star Team. Laredo is currently 3rd in the Southern Conference and are looking to close in on the Allen Americans and Odessa Jackalopes in the Southern Conference.

What Work ethics do you do during the offseason to stick in shape on goaltending?

I train five times a week with the training staff of the Anaheim Ducks. They have a great training system in California.

JP, Is your father named Lou? I'm from Jonestown, PA and in the early 70s we had a goalie named Lou Levasseur. He was just awesome for us and won the NAHL Championship

No, my father is named Rene. I heard about Lou Levasseur but he is not in my family.

What is the design on your goalie mask?

It's a chop on top. One side of piece of corn to represent the state of Iowa. and the other side is downtown Des Moines, Iowa where he grew up.

How do you not get tired from being on the feet during the entire game?

You get used to it. I've done this my whole life, all the practices and games. I stay in pretty good shape off of the ice, which makes me in good shape on the ice during the season as well.

Have you ever been in a Goalie Fight?

No, Never in my career.

Who, would you say is the strongest team you have faced in the CHL so far this season?

The Odessa Jackalopes they are a pretty fast and really good team.

J.P. so would you think about Laredo and how different is it from being over seas?

It's different here for sure. I really love it here. It's great because I get to learn a different culture.

Have you ever met J.S. Giguere?

Yes, I'm good friends with him. I attended training camps with him, and he's a really great guy.

What NHL Goaltender did you grow up idolizing and who do you think are the top few in the NHL right now?

I grew up idolizing Patrick Roy. I think the best goalie in the NHL right now is Roberto Luongo.

Central Hockey League opening week schedule

The last of the big professional hockey leagues in North America gets underway on Friday as the Central Hockey League will get ready with some great matchups and 2 new teams set to make their league debut on the road. Let's start with a rematch of the Championship series between the Texas Brahmas and the Colorado Eagles.

On Friday in Colorado is the Eagles first chance to get back at the Brahmas since beating them in 5 games to win the C.H.L. President's Cup Championship which included winning 3 in a row at the NYTEX Sports Center in North Richland Hill, Texas to win championship.

Nearly all the big guns for the Brahmas are back looking to repeat as champions with players like Justin Kinnunen, Jason Deitsch and goalie Brett Jeager who had an amazing 2.20 G.A.A. and a .930 SV% during last years playoffs that just shut down the Eagles offense who scored a league leading 275 goals during the regular season last year.

Colorado has been among the elite in the Central Hockey League, despite losing the Championship Series the last 2 years. In 2008, it was the Arizona Sundogs which won the 2008 Presidents Cup Championship, but they failed to make the playoffs last season.

Then losing to the Brahmas last year, part of the problem was that lack of scoring depth with Ed Mcgrane scoring 13 goals during last year's playoffs while no one else had more then 5, despite having 4 players having 8 or more assists during the post season.

Among the teams that are looking to have a break out year are the South Texas trio of the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees, Laredo Bucks and the Corpus Christi Icerayz. For Corpus Christi, they were in a battle with New Mexico and Arizona for the 5th and final playoff spot in the Southern Conference for basically the entire season until they were able to clinch the playoff spot on the 2nd to final night of the regular season.

With players like Justin Quenneville who had a break out year last season and some new players like Jereme Tendler to help out on the defense.

Laredo and Rio Grande Valley who both had early playoff exits are hungry for big time success. After a great play in round against the Icerayz, the Killer Bees fell down back to earth when they got sweeped by the defending champion Brahmas in the Southern Conference Semifinals. However, it was a coming out party for the Killer Bees who are looking for a very big year to battle with the likes of Odessa, Laredo and Texas for the top of the Southern Conference.

Some of the top players that the Killer Bees will be looking for is Grant Goeckner-Zoeller who had a great year by scoring 21 goals last season.

For the Laredo Bucks, it was the first time in a long time that they haven't reached at least the Southern Conference Final in the C.H.L. After finishing 3rd and losing to Odessa in the Conference Semifinals, the Bucks are looking to get back in the Championship Chase with players like Darryl Smith who had a fantastic year by scoring 70 points (34 G, 36 A), and finishing just outside the top 10 in league scoring.

For these 3 teams, Laredo will travel to Bossier-Shreveport and Rio Grande Valley. For the Killer Bees, will only have 1 game by hosting the Laredo Bucks.

Finally, for the Corpus Christi Icerayz will travel to Odessa to play the Jackalopes on Friday, and then hosting the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs on Saturday night.

Finally, the 2 new teams in the Allen Americans and the Missouri Mavericks are ready to hit the road on long road trips as both teams won't play their first home game until early November as both teams perform last minute work to their new arenas.

For Allen, the Americans will start with a pair of games as they will head west to play the Arizona Sundogs. The teams first home game will take place on November 7 against the Corpus Christi Icerayz.

The Missouri Mavericks, it will be a trip to South Dakota as a weekend with the Rapid City Rush awaits them. For the Mavericks, the teams first home game will be on November 13 against the Wichita Thunder.

2009-2010 Central Hockey League Schedule: South Zone

With the 2009-2010 Central Hockey League Schedule now out, I will show the schedule for the teams that I'm going to cover in the South Zone. In my last post, I did the teams which are in the North Zone which are the Allen Americans, Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs, Texas Brahmas and the Tulsa Oilers.

For the South Zone, the teams will be the Amarillo Gorillas, Corpus Christi Icerayz, Laredo Bucks, Odessa Jackalopes, and the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees.
