Major Junior Scores and Playoff Updates

The 2nd Round of the Major Junior Playoffs is now underway as the 24 teams that are still in the running for the Memorial Cup Tournament in Brandon, Manitoba continues. Unlike the Conference Quarterfinals, Calgary is making sure that Medicine Hat doesn't give the Hitmen a scare, Calgary gave the Tigers a 5-2 wake up call that the Hitmen have been on a roll since game 5 of the Moose Jaw Series.

Elsewhere in the West, the Brandon Wheat Kings continue to roll as the team took both games in Saskatoon 6-5 in OT & 4-1 in Game 2 last night. With the next 3 in Brandon, the Wheat Kings will be looking to make quick work of the Saskatoon Blades in the Conference Semifinals.

Finally the Kelowna Rockets are proving to be a tough team as players like Mark Guggenburger is looking to use their WHL Championship Experience from last year as the series is tied at 1-1. While the Vancouver Giants won a high-flying Game 1 as 15 goals were scored as the Giants won 9-6 where Brendan Gallagher used a 4 goal game to help the Giants overcome the Winterhawks in the series' opener.

The Ontario Hockey League has gone to form as the top seeds in Barrie and Windsor are leading 1-0 and 2-0. Barrie is currently playing the Brampton Battalion this afternoon in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Semifinal. On an ind. level, it's a battle of top prospects for this year's NHL Draft as Taylor Hall & Jonathan Seguin look to prove their cases that they should be the #1 Draft Pick this summer.

The #2 VS. #3 Series' is going to be where the drama is going to be as the Mississauga & Ottawa have traded blows in the first two games. While the Kitchener Rangers & London Knights have used high scoring games to win in the first 2 games, including a 13 goal game where the London won 8-5 in game 1 where 7 different players scored in the game led by Daniel Erlich who had 2 goals and an assist in the game.

The QMJHL has all 4 of their series at 2-0 as St. John, Drummondville, Victoriaville and Moncton are currently leading the best of 7 Quarterfinals Series' 2-0. This is not surprising as the 4 teams were the top 2 out of the Atlantic & Central Divisions as the Strongest divisions in the QMJHL During the season.

Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Quarterfinals Schedule

With the Quarterfinals getting underway tomorrow night. Here's a look at the Schedule and a little review of the 1st Round.

Of the 3 Major Junior Leagues, the QMJHL Provided the most drama as we had 2 great series' that went to 7 games. In addition to Montreal VS. Gatineau & Rimouski VS. Chicoutimi series' going the distance, both game 7's went to OT as the Olympiques and the Rimouski Oceanic were able to finish off their series and advance to the QFS.

Some other series that were looking to pull off some upsets were the Val-dor Fourers were able to pull off a game 1 win. Then the next game they were able to keep it close for two periods as Rouyn-Nornda & Val-dor were tied at 3-3 going into the 2nd period before the Huskies scored at the very beginning and very end of the 3rd to pull away.

Games 3 & 4 in Val-dor were also very close as both games were very close 1 goal games. Game 3 saw a 1-0 loss and a 4-3 win. The Huskies were finally able to finish Val-dor in Games 5 & 6 with a 5-1 & 9-4 wins to finish off what turned out to be a great series.

The Teams that looked the most impressive was the Drummondville Voltigeurs as they were the only team to pull off a first round sweep where all 4 wins were by at least 3 goals in the series. Also the two Atlantic Teams in the St. John Seadogs and the Moncton Wildcats made quick work of the P.E.I. Rockets & Cape Breton Screaming Eagles in 5 games each.

The 2nd Round will see the Top Seeded St. John go up against the Gatineau as the Olympiques who were the only 3rd place team advance out of the Divisional Round. Drummondville & Rimouski will go at it for the 2nd straight year after the Voltigeurs sweeped the Oceanic last year. The Ramparts & Victoriaville Tigers will go at it in the #3 VS. #6 Series as the Tigers had to shake off a tough Cataractes Team in the Divisional Round. Finally the Rouyn-Nornda Huskies & Moncton Wildcats will play each other as Moncton had the better record, but will be on the road due to now winning the Atlantic Division.

My Quarterfinal Picks

St. John over Gatineau in 6 Games

Drummondville over Rimouski in 5 Games

Quebec City over Victoriaville in 6 Games

Moncton over Rouyn-Nornda in 6 Games
