From the Farmers Branch Stars Center: It was a game where the Tornado just couldn't get much going on a day where the Tornado found themselves on the Penalty Kill way to many times and some careless mistakes like a couple of high shots on a breakaway and not getting constant pressure like getting just 11 shots off combined in the 2nd & 3rd periods as well, the Tornado attacked looked soft at times and weren't able to challenge to put much of a challenge on Miners Goalie Danny Kowalski.
It didn't take long for the Miners to get on the board first as Richard Wigton went off quick give & go from JJ Huerena from the blue line that was just onside where he sent a wrist shot to the bottom corner of the net to go up 1-0 just 1:54 into the game.
The midway point of the 1st period saw one of the few major offensive outbreaks the Tornado were able to go on on their 1st PP of the game, the Tornado was building some momentum late on a Trent Williams Penalty for Slashing at the 6:27 mark of the period. Then just seconds after the Williams penalty expires, the Tornado were able to tie the game at 1-1 on a Cameron Choate Rebound after Gary Lassan's original shot was stopped on the line.
Then after that goal and a Clay Thomas Penalty for Head Checking at 10:05, Jake Townsend got his 1st of 3 points tonight on an odd-man rush that was started by Justin Tutag who also had a goal & an assist in this game that was passed to Wheatly that began the rush where a late minute pass to get Tornado Goalie Cooper Cotheran out of position for the easy goal to take a 2-1 Miners Lead.
The Miners finished the 1st to go up 2-1 where the Miners Special Teams was making a big impact after scoring a goal and getting some other major amounts of ice time in the Tornado Defensive zone tiring out the Tornado Defenders.
Early in the 2nd period as the Miners were able to continue their offensive zone dominance in the 2nd period when Jake Townsend was able to send a great pass to get to Justin Tutag for a great backhand goal to go up 3-1 just 2:21 into the 2nd period and at this early stage, it was beginning to be a long climb back for the Tornado who was having little impact all day long for the most part.
After that Miners Goal, the Tornado were desperate to swing any kind of offensive momentum to turn the game around, it showed by making some careless mistakes like giving away an easy pass that allowed a 2 on none break away where Nick Van Ankel and Alec Butcher where Cotheran made one of his better saves of the game on a save on a great deflection that looked like it was going to make it a 4-1 game right there.
The Final period saw more of the same for the Tornado where 3 PP Attempts lead to little major chances and even an instance where a stupid penalty by Cameron Choate did an interference penalty after the whistle blown and Josh Haverstrom had already committed a high sticking penalty that would have given the Tornado a PP. Another untimely penalty for the Tornado happened at the 9:02 mark when Tornado Forward Brandon Lowery committed a Head Contact Penalty which would have made it just a 2 minute minor, but just after some auguring with the refs protesting the call, he was given a Game Misconduct Penalty and was ejected as well.
The final nail in the coffin came with 1:34 left when Miners Forward Alec Butcher continued a great showcase this week with an empty net goal for his 10th point (5G 5A) of this weeks Showcase to give the Miners the 4-1 win. That also took him to the NAPHL U18 Scoring Lead with 29 points (14G 15A) in 17 games this season
Both teams are heading in very different directions here this week. For the Miners, this puts them at 3-0-1 this week & the only thing keeping them from being a perfect 4-0 was a last minute comeback in their Showcase opener against the NAPHL U18 Leading Pittsburgh Viper Stars to comeback from 4-2 down with just under 2 minutes left, only to tie the game in regulation, then win it in a SO.
For the Tornado, since an opening win against the Detroit Falcons, they have lost 3 straight to fall to 1-3-0 this week and 4-10-3 overall this season in the NAPHL. The Tornado U18's will wrap up their Showcase tomorrow morning against the Pittsburgh Viper Stars at 9:00 AM over at the McKinney Stars Center.
In other action, the Dallas U18 Team (ATTHSHL All Stars) are 0-4 at this showcase with a pair of losses against the California Titans 4-2 & St. Louis Selects 6-3 earlier today. However, they were able to push the California Titans as they were able to out-shoot the Titans 35-29 & get within a single goal twice in the 2nd period. The ATTHSHL All Stars will finish up the Showcase against the Wenatchee Wild at 11:30 AM tomorrow morning at the Frisco Stars Center.
It was a tough loss for the Tornado U16's to the Carolina Jr. Hurricanes after scoring all 3 of their goals in the 2nd period and out-shot the Jr. Hurricanes 38-24. But Jr. Hurricanes Goalie Alexander Bisi came up big in the 3rd period by stopping all 18 shots and denying all 4 shooters in the SO to allow the Hurricanes to get the 4-3 win. However, following the loss to the Jr. Hurricanes, the Tornado made it up for it with a convincing 4-0 win over the Detroit Falcons who were lead by Freedie Kratz with 2 goals, Mason Weis with 2 assists & a 16 save shutout performance in which Tornado Goalie Jay Harrington made real easy.
For the Tornado U16's they will wrap up the Showcase with a game in Frisco at Noon against the Las Vegas Storm.
