Austin Sutter in the CHL Chat Room

Here's a look at when Austin Sutter was in the Central Chat Room recently. They will do chats with several players from different teams throughout the season.

How do you feel about the team overall this year?

I am very excited about our team this year. The season is very fresh, but getting off to a good start helps tremendously. Our team feels very confident, knowing we do have a lot of work. Every team will improve throughout the season. Our goal is to keep improving everyday.

What is it like when players from different leagues like the ECHL, do they adapt to the CHL quickly?

I think that the CHL has improved greatly in the four seasons I have been involved. I have seen players transition from the CHL and ECHL. I know both leagues have a lot of talent and is great hockey watch. The bigger difference in the leagues is probably the average age of it's players. The ECHL has younger players then the CHL.

What do you and coach Pellerin expect from the team this year, where do you see us going this season?

Every teams goal is to win a championship. Our goal is to improve everyday as a team, be competitive each game, and what that leads to hopefully a successful run in the playoffs.

How was your first training camp under coach Pellerin different from your experience with past coaches?

Yes, it's very different. We decided to keep our camp small in terms of the number of players and starting to work on systems early. Mix a little work and conditioning in and so far our teams feels pretty good.

I know that you are a player who steps onto the ice with the attitude of giving your all. Where would rate this group of guys to those you've played with in different seasons?

We feel that we have a team full of good attitude players. Guys that will block shots, back check and pay a price to win. This team ranks high on my list who are willing to buy into a team concept.

I know you have spent a lot of time with youth hockey in Amarillo, what is the best thing about your time donated to youth hockey? Also whats the best advice you could give a young player in Amarillo?

I have a passion for working with kids. The feeling is amazing when you see yourself making a difference in a child's life. When I was a young player, I had the blessing of many players in my community giving back to youth. I feel like it's my turn to give back now. The best advice I could give is to follow your heart. If you love something, give it all you have. If it's sports, music, art, education, or whatever it may be, do it to the best of your ability. Find a passion and fuel your love with hard work, dedication, and the commitment to be the best at what you do.

What do you like the most about playing in Amarillo for the number of years you have played here?

The people are amazing. I could write a book on how many wonderful friends my wife and I have in this town. We feel so blessed to be a part of this community. Amarillo is an honest, hard working city. It's the perfect place for us. Thank you to everyone who makes hockey in Amarillo possible.

New Poll Question about the AHL

It's time for a new poll question as we will take on the 3 AHL Teams from the Lone Star State. It's a simple question as it takes on the Lone Star Faceoff. The Question is, Who Will win the Lone Star Faceoff rivalry at the end of the season. Be sure to answer the question and provide some feed back on your thoughts as all 3 Texas teams in the AHL are off to a pretty good start and could be some future playoff matchups come spring time.

The next game in the Lone Star Faceoff will come on tomorrow night as the San Antonio Rampage will host the Texas Stars at 7:00 PM at the AT&T Center in San Antonio.

I want to see your picks and comments on this rivalry.

The Pipeline Show

Here's a radio show to check out when you want to find out info on the latest in the Junior Leagues, NCAA, top NHL Prospects. It's called the The Pipeline Show and I have been listening to this show since the off season and especially in the run up to the NHL Draft.

It's a weekly show that's based in Edmonton, Alberta which comes on the Team 1260 which is the big Sports Radio station in Edmonton.

They do interviews with the top Junior and College players from across North America and also with media outlets that cover them from across the contentint. One of the best features they do every week is that they talk to a NHL Draft eligible prospect that will most likely be taken in the NHL Draft next summer.

It's co hosted by Dean Millard and Guy Flamming that helped started the show back in February of 2006 to help fill a void that for the most part, wasn't covered in Canada and the USA that closely. The show has been a roaring success and nearly every week you hear emails from all over North America on hockey topics of all kinds.

The show covers so many events throughout the season, but the best times to hear the show are usually 5 major events or the Grand Slam Events is what they called. These are the

  • World Junior Championships during the Winter Holidays
  • NCAA Frozen Four in April
  • CHL Memorial Cup in May
  • AHL Calder Cup in June
  • NHL Draft in the Summer

These are the biggest events which both include the championships of different levels, what ever it's international, the NCAA or the major junior league crowning championships. However, it also highlights players that could have a shot of making the NHL in the near future.

In addition to the Grand Slam Events that are smaller in their importance, but still get some strong coverage during the events. These events include

  • World Junior A Challenge in November
  • RBC Cup in May
  • U18 World Championships in April

The World Junior A Challenge is a new event created in 2006 as a chance for players that play in the Junior A Leagues in Canada and the top European Junior Leagues to get a chance to show their talent in an international tournament. These are for players that might have gone under the radar and most likely wouldn't have gotten a chance at the World Junior Championships.

The RBC Cup is the Canadian Junior A National Championships which crowns the national champions after the teams have won their Provincial and Regional Championships.

Finally, the U18 World Championships are for the best players under the age of 18, oppose to the World Juniors which is for players under the age of 20.

If you want to learn and get to know more about this level of hockey. This is a great show to get to learn about the top players and teams at this age groups and levels. The Pipeline Show comes on Tuesday nights from 9-11 PM Eastern Time/ 8-10 PM Central on Tuesday nights.

If you can't listen live, they have a huge media archive section which goes back most of it's history. You can listen to it online from the website, or on the stations website where some of the segments are available to download on your Ipod.

Update on Texas Rivals

With the poll question about the Dallas Stars finishing in the Pacific Division about to expire, the new poll question i'm going to put up is about the 3 AHL Team in the Lone Star State. It's going to be the about which of the 3 teams will eventually win the Lone Star Face Off.

As you know, the newly created rivalry was created after the Texas Stars came into the league in addition with the creative minds from the Houston Aeros who had a strong season last year and the San Antonio Rampage who finished last in the West Division last season.

So far this season in the AHL, the Texas Stars and San Antonio Rampage currently control the 1st and 2nd spots out west with some impressive performance's against each other and the rest of the league. Houston has been off to a slower start, but a strong SO Win over the Hamilton Bulldogs last night have put them in 3rd place out west.

The top of the west is very tight with the Texas teams controlling the top 3 spots at the moment and being separated by just 2 points. Below them in the West Division. Rockford and Peoria are in 4th and 5th place at 11 and 10 points. Bringing up the rear is the Chicago Wolves who have made a lot of changes recently which include the signing of 47 year old forward Chris Cheilos and a new coaching staff put in recently.

Upcoming games in the Lone Star Faceoff

10/30: Texas Stars VS. San Antonio Rampage 7:00 PM

11/1: Houston Aeros VS. Texas Stars 5:00 PM

11/7: San Antonio Rampage VS. Houston Aeros 7:35 PM

11/15: Texas Stars VS. San Antonio Rampage 3:00 PM

Texas Brahmas VS. Allen Americans

In addition to the Lone Star Faceoff, the newest rivalry in the Central Hockey League will play against each other for the very first time ever on Saturday night at the NYTEX Sports Center in North Richland Hills, for the Brahmas, it's been a slow start so far with a 1-2-1 record after a very tough first 4 games against the Colorado Eagles and the Mississippi Riverkings.

Both the Eagles and Riverkings are looking to play a big factor in the Northern Conference this season.

For the Americans, a great 4-0 start has surprised a lot of experts as the early season road trip continues as the last minute work to the rink at the Allen Event Center is about to be completed for their first ever home game coming up on November 7 against the Corpus Christi Icerayz. So far for Allen, a pair of wins against the Arizona Sundogs on opening weekend, followed by a weekend set in Laredo and Bossier-Shreveport have gotten the team to 3rd place in the South so far.

After the game on Saturday at NYTEX, the Allen Americans will host the Brahmas for the first time at the Allen Event Center on November 11. Saturday's matchup will be the first of 9 throughout the regular season.

As of right now, they has been no official name for the Brahmas VS. Americans rivalry as of yet. However, If the teams come up with a name, I will post it here.

Belarus and Sweden Rosters for World Jr. A Challenge

The rosters for the Sweden and Belarus squads for the World Jr. A Challenge is now out.

For Sweden, they are making their team debut at this event and are looking to grow their strength at the Junior Levels as the Junior teams in Sweden have exploded in strength in recent years. This could be a warm up as Sweden teams have come up just short in recent U20 and U18 World Championships as they look to win their first World Championship in the Junior Levels. Nearly all the Swedish Players play in the Swedish U20 Elite Leagues.

For Belarus, this one of the biggest events of the year for them to be on the world spotlight as they won't by playing in the World Junior Championship this season. However, they could competiting for spots when they host the World U18 Championships coming later in the season coming up in April which will be in the countries capital of Minsk.

Most of the players for Belarus will be coming from the Belarusian National League with a couple in the USA Junior and Canadiean Junior A leagues.

I'm hoping to find the Russian Roster soon as they will most likely be the final team to revel their roster.

Texas HS Update

We are a few weeks into the AT&T Metroplex HS Hockey League. In the Gold Tier, the Allen Eagles are on top with a perfect 4-0-0 record. Just below them is a gridlock of teams with 6 points which are seperate 2nd through 5th. One of the big surprizes is the Flower Mound Jagaurs as the defending league champions at 1-1-2 which sit in 7th place and have played in 3 OT games already this season. Bringing up the bottom of the Gold Tier, include Highland Park which are still winless after finishing 4-19-1 last season.

As for the invindual races, Zack Halle is leading the scoring race with 8 points which include 6 assists, while players like Mitchell Rausch from Flower Mound and Marcel Toure for SL Carroll are just behind them with 7 points so far this season.

In the Silver Division, the Denton Co. Spartans are looking very strong so far with a perfect 5-0-0 record and will be looking to run away with the Central Division with a 5 point lead over SL Carroll.

In the East, Garland ISD has looked very strong after being out for a couple of years are 4-0-0 with a strong +17 GD with Richardson ISD just 2 points and are looking very storng. A very imporant game could be coming up just before Thanksgiving as Richardson will play Garland on November 21 and could play a huge roll towards who's going to have control of the East Division.

Out West, Keller and Midlothian are going to be running away with the division as Keller, Arlington Martin and HEB/Birdville will be struggling this season.

Here's a look at the current standings in D/FW.

Amarillo Gorillas Hot Start

It's only 6 games into the season, but the Amarillo Gorillas are quickly beginning to show the Central Hockey League that the Gorillas are looking very tough and dangerous in the first couple of weeks into the season.

Last week was a great example as the Sundogs out shot the Gorillas 46-22 during the game. However, the reining goaltender of the week had another stellar game by stopping 44 of 46 shots in the 5-2 win over the Sundogs back on Wednesday night by the help of a great PP by going 2-6 in the game including opening the scoring and put the game away in the final minutes.

Their penalty killing was also very strong by only allowing 1 PP Goal and Jake Morrissette scoring short handed midway through the 3rd period with great assists by James Jernberg and Austin Sutter.

Their top players are leading the way, including Joe Guenther who's leading the league with 7 goals through 6 games so far. This past weekend, he also had 2 goals in the 3-2 win over the Missouri Mavericks back on Saturday night. Some other important forwards that have been off to good starts include Jake Morissette with 5 goals and Anthony Bataglia who already has 4 goals in the young season.

If Amarillo wants to prove that the Gorillas are for real this year and that the start is not just a fluke after finishing with the worst record in the league last year by winning only 19 games all of last season. They will need to get rid of the culture of losing that's plagued the team the last few seasons, players like Joe Guenther who's shaping up to be a contender for the CHL Scoring title this season, along with Anthony Bataglia and Stuart Macrea to help put the puck in the net.

On defense, Andrew Smale has been great on the blue line where he's expected to be a big play maker and Neil Smith who's expected to bring the physicality where he racked up over 100 penalty minutes last season.

So far on defense, the team already has a very strong +8 goal differential (24 GF 16 GA) which is a far cry from having the worst GD last season with a -101 (193 GF 294 GA) which was the worst in the league by a pretty sizable margin, as from what we have seen so far, this stat is going to be much much better this year.

One of the players that's going to be under the radar that will have a big season include defensemen James Jernberg who's going to be one of the most physical defensemen on the ice and will be an important part of the special teams where he got all 3 points in the 5-2 win against Arizona.

Speaking of Special Teams, being in the penalty box has been no problem for the team as the team has been a solid 85.37 % on the Penalty Kill. With the exception of the game on October 24 against the Odessa Jackalopes where they gave up 4 PP Goals in a 9-4 loss, this is been a very solid part of their game and they entered the off season looking to improve greatly after being near the bottom on the Penalty Kill last season.

In goal, Mike Brown who's had a great start to the season which included being the leagues goalie of the week during the opening weekend has been rock solid. A shutout against the Wichita Thunder gave them a spring board to early success which also include impressive wins over the Odessa Jackalopes and the Arizona Sundogs. After not having a solid reliable goalie last year, Brown has been off a good start which includes a 3-1-0 record and a 2.33 GAA and a .938% SV.

His backup, Tuomas Lothander has been off a 2-0 start and a 3.12 GAA with him looking to lower that stat as the season goes on and has a .895 SV%. If both goalies can even come close to help them get off to the fast start, they could be a lot of long nights for opponent's this season in Amarillo and across the league.

This is a team that's looking to get back and battle with the elite in the Central Hockey League and with the way they playing so far, they will be roaring up the standings and look to battle with the best in the Southern Conference like the defending champion Texas Brahmas and South Texas Powerhouse Laredo Bucks.

Professional Scores from 10/26-11/1

Here's the scores for this weeks games in the NHL, AHL and the CHL. One of the biggest things to look to the schedule. After a strong road trip, the Stars will enjoy a couple of days off before what should be a realitivy easy week as they will play the Florida Panthers, Toronto Maple Leafs who are still winless and have the worst record and the Nasvhille Predators for the 3rd time this month.

In the CHL, It's the first ever matchup between the 2 metroplex teams as the Texas Brahmas and the Allen Americans in North Richland Hills at the NYTEX Sports Center.

Tonight's Games 10/22

It's the 2nd of a back to back for the Dallas Stars after the Stars won 4-2 at the Honda Center against the Ducks where the Stars dominated the Ducks during the 1st and 2nd periods as they were up 3-0 at one point. However, late in the 2nd period, the tide began to turn with a goal late in the 2nd period to make it 3-1. Midway through the 3rd, the Ducks made it 3-2 and were looking to force OT. Stars goalie Marty Turco and a great team defense prevented them from tieing which allowed Steve Ott who returned from injury to score the game winner empty net goal to win the game 4-2. It's another late one tonight as the Stars look to win back to back games for the first time this year and get back at the Kings for beating them back on Monday night.

Else where in the NHL Tonight, a busy schedule as we have the Rangers Devils Rivaly at Madison Square Garden. Also one of the big early surprises as the Columbus Blue Jackets trail the Blackhawks by just one point in the Central Division as they take on the Edmonton Oiles. We also have Boston and Philadelphia will play each other as the countdown to the Winter Classic moves on before the New Year's Eve Showdown at Fenway Park.

In the Major Junior's tonight, it's mostly in the OHL as the Windsor Spitfires and London Knights as one of the OHL's Biggest rivals will play each other. Also, Saginaw and Peterborough look to get back on track after both teams have been struggling the last week. In the QMJHL, 2 games on tonight as the Lewiston Maineiacs will take on the Victoriaville Tigers. Also, a great Atlantic Division showdown as the St. John Seadogs will take on the Acadie-Bathurst Titans.
