A look at the Dr. Pepper Arena

Last night, the Texas Tornado held an Open House to show off the renovation of the Dr. Pepper Arena in Frisco where the team held an inter squad game, then afterward you could meet the players and head coach Tony Curtale along with assistant Jesse Davis about the upcoming season. In addition, the arena has some new features and changed some things that I will go into more detail in a little bit such adding all LED Light scoreboards and a new Gold Club.

First, the fans seemed to be happy to have junior hockey back in the D/FW Area after having the team being off the ice for a year and a half. The last time the Tornado were on the ice was on April 11, 2008 when the Topeka Roadrunners completed a 3 game sweep in the South Division Semifinal where they were outscored 18-3 in the 3 games after finishing 4th in the South Division that year. During the 2007-2008 regular season, the team went into the playoffs with a record of 20-33-5 with just 45 points which was the worst record of the 12 playoff teams that year.

From the players that I got to chat with, the team is ready to start the season and reintroduce the team to the D/FW Area, especially from 2004-2006 when the Tornado won 3 straight NAHL Robertson Cup Championship including winning it on home soil in 2004.

From the players thoughts, the teams in the South Division to watch out for are the St. Louis Bandits who have won the NAHL Robertson Cup Title the last 3 years and the instate rival Wichita Falls Wildcats where the Wildcats ended the 2008-2009 season with a sour taste after just coming short of pulling off a 1st round upset against the Topeka Roadrunners.

Now the Arena Itself

Some of the biggest changes to the arena is taking out the huge party rooms they used to have and are replacing it with a very nice Gold Club which has flat screen TVS and a view of the Dallas Stars practice rink. Also the number of Suites has been increased from 8 to 12 and they changed the look of them, the suites are about the same size, but the suites will also have access to the team's gold club.

Also, for those of you that are looking for info with a big group, then the Ice Level Party Zone and the Promenade Picnic Zone are for you.

The Ice Level Party Zone is intended for groups that have can have any where from 30-100 people. The Party Zone is a private area behind the Tornado defending goal with several tables and an eye to eye view of the arena to enjoy the game and mix mingle with your group during breaks in the action.

For smaller groups, the Promenade Picnic Zone is area where you get your own picnic tables in the northeast corner of the arena. This is for groups that have 30-50 people.

Then you can also get group seats in either the premium or end zone seating areas.

Some other perks of a group package in these areas include

  • a personal sales rep and marketing assistance.
  • Your Group recognized on the scoreboard
  • A Raffle for Tornado Merchandise and prizes
  • A Twister Meal Deal that includes a hot dog, bag of chips and a Dr. Pepper Product.

They also have End Zone and Premium ticket packages which also includes these perks and your option of the meal deal.

As for the total capacity, the builders have increased the number of fans that could fit from 3700 to just under 6000 and is clearly the best arena in the Dr. Pepper Arena and is one of the best arenas for junior hockey in all of North America.

I would highly recommend taking in some games for the Texas Tornado when they start the home portion of the schedule on September 25 against the Topeka Roadrunners and nearly all the games are on weekends and with it being in Frisco which is near the Dr. Pepper/7up Ballpark which is home to the Texas Rangers Double A Affiliate Frisco Roughriders and the Stonebriar Mall, it's really easy to get to and when the games start up, it should be really exciting to see the Texas Tornado back in action.

Dallas Stars going to Olympic Camps

Throughout the summer, the 12 teams that will be playing in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics coming up in Feb. The different Olympic camps are the 1st step to find out who will eventually make the final rosters and will get to play in the 12 team tournament. Several players from the Dallas Stars have been invited, the highest profile is Mike Modano who is deeply in the mix to make the USA Roster what will be most likely for the final time in his career who just turned 39 during the offseason. As one of the last players from the USA Golden era with players like Jeremy Roenick who retired earlier this month, he's going to bring them in as a leadership role off the ice most likely as the team will most likely will be very young with players like Patrick Kane and Zach Parise.

For USA Hockey, the main goal is to introduce a new generation of USA Players to the international spotlight to improve the teams chances at the both the senior and junior levels in the future. Back in 2006, the USA had one of their worst tournament showings ever where the team only won one game against Kazakhstan and had some disappointing results in the group stage which included a tie against Latvia and 3 losses against Slovakia, Sweden and Russia all by one goal. Then in the Quarterfinals, where they were knocked out by Finland.

This time the USA is looking to the future as they will hope to be a surprise medalist, but looking towards 2014 where the Americans hope to have a shot at Gold.

For Mike Modano, he's hoping to make up for a bad performance from 2006 and most likely end his international career on a strong note and possibly helping the USA get back on the Medal Podium and help the young players deal with the pressure of playing international hockey at both the junior and senior levels.

For Canada, Marty Turco was one of the surprises left off the roster despite making the team as the 3rd goalie and getting very little playing time in Italy in 2006, but with Canada hosting and under a lot of pressure to medal, he could possibly have a shot if he has a strong year to possibly sneak into the roster.

After an injury plagued season, Brendan Morrow is ready to hit the ice and as the captain of the Dallas Stars, he's looking to make up for lost time and regardless of him injured or not, he's looking to make the team as many fans in Canada believe that he can come back and have a strong tournament on home ice. For Stephane Robidas who made it with the defensemen, he's going to have a hard time dealing with players like Scott Niedermayer and Chris Pronger which should be on the team without much debate on defense, it will be tough for him to make the roster even though he may have what it takes for 2014 Olympic Tournament.

As for some of the other hopefuls, Jere Lehtinen is back in the fray after helping Finland win the Silver Medal in 2006 along with other players like Nicklas Hagman, and Teemu Selanne. He's hoping to get the Fins back on the Medal podium and by going one step higher by winning the Olympic Tournament coming up in Feb.

Sweden will have also have a couple of Stars players with Nicklas Grossman, Fabian Brunnstrom and Loui Eriksson hoping to help defend Sweden's Gold medal from 2006 in Italy.

What's the future of the Duncanville Starscenter?

In recent months, the Duncanville Starscenter has had a huge slowdown in business which has forced one of the ice rinks to be taken out, which makes it the only Starscenter in the D/FW Area to have one ice rink while the others in the area have 2. The Dr. Pepper Starscenter in Duncanville has been opened since October of 2000, when the team and the city of Duncanville have signed a 25 year deal to operate the Starscenter. The last couple of months, the city has listen to different companies that would like to take it over if the Duncanville Starscenter has to close, the deal that may be the most promising is a company that would convert the Starcenter into a basketball faculty.

Back in the spring, Stars President Jeff Cogen went to the city and told them that it hasn't been working out. However, the city responded that one of the reasons that the relationship hasn't worked is because the team hasn't promoted the Starscenter in the southern part of the Metroplex like they have with the others including the new Starscenter which will open up in Mckinney coming up this fall.

So if the Duncanville Starscenter closes, how will it affect area players and teams from places like Duncanville, Arlington, and Mansfield?

Will for one thing, they will have to find another place to play, most likely either the Euless Starscenter or the Parks at Arlington Mall where they only have one ice rink their. It would affect the AT&T Metroplex High School Hockey League for players and teams that live in that area and travel teams would probably would have to reduce the number of teams and players that are involved because of rink availability.

The Dallas Stars said that the Duncanville Starscenter will remain open for now with just 1 rink unless a deal is done with another company to either to renew the promotion strategy with the Duncanville Starscenter or if another company reaches a deal to take it over. However, the Dallas Stars and the city of Duncanville did say that it would everything possible to keep the ice rink open right now.

I'm hoping that the the team and Duncanville can repair this situation and renew a strategy that can keep the Duncanville Starscenter open and keeping it busy so that different sports from ice hockey to Speed Skating to continue to thrive all across the D/FW Area.

Here's the story from WFAA TV: www.wfaa.com/sharedcontent/dws/news/localnews/tv/stories/wfaa090824_mo_starcenters.111ff8e89.html

Opening of the Mckinney Starcenter

Recently, the city of Mckinney has announced an update on the progress of the new Starcenter which is about to open up in Mckinney which will most likely be sometime in October. This would be great timing knowing that most hockey seasons will be starting up around their. The Stars announced that they just started accepting applications for different positions. For the most part, the Starcenter will be like the others for the most part with 2 ice rinks, full pro shop with both team apparel and equipment, a viewing area, snack bar and is also near the Michael Johnson Performance Center and the Copper Fitness and Spa.

It will be adjacent to the ballfields and it will be around 80,000 square feet of space in the Craig Ranch area of Mckinney. I will provide more details, especially when the Starcenter opens up in the Fall.

British Colombia and Alberta Junior A schedules

With the opening of the junior a seasons in both British Colombia and Alberta coming up. I wanted to show you the schedule for the opening weekend and links for the entire season which starts up on September 11 in both leagues. In B.C. the Vernon Vipers are the defending RBC Cup national champions and will be opening up against the Salmon Arm Silverbacks while the host from last year's tournament, the Victoria Grizzlies will open up against the Nanaimo Clippers.

The BCHL will have 17 teams in the league with the addition of Williams Lake in the Interior Conference. Another big change is the removal of the Island and Mainland Divisions in the Coastal Conference which was one of the weirdest divisional alignments that I have ever seen in hockey at any level.

I will be doing the different regions and posting the divisions and opening week schedules of the different junior a leagues across Canada.

Tom Hicks Situation: How it Could affect the Stars

All summer long, the finical situation of Tom Hicks has been making news most of the baseball season as earlier in the baseball season he had to take a 15 million dollar loan to cover payroll and layoff some staff at the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.

In addition, back in March he defaulted on a loan payment and is looking at refinancing the loan for his sports teams both the Texas Rangers and the Dallas Stars and his half of Liverpool FC in the English Premier League. Recently with the Texas Rangers in the AL Wild Card Lead, they have been rumors that the reason the team didn't do any moves to help increase their chances is because that he couldn't add any payroll for the rest of the season.

So for Stars fans, the question is how could this affect the Stars season when it starts in October? It could affect them in the same ways by not pulling off big trades or sign any free agents that the team didn't do a lot of during the off season. According to the Dallas Business Journal, the NHL Sent a letter to the Hicks Sports Group about how to address the concerns and their sources of income to help redo the loan.

Earlier in the baseball season, reports started to surface that he wanted to sell a minority share of the team, now it looks like that he may want to sell everything he has with the Rangers and it's possibly believed that the same thing may be happening with the Dallas Stars sometime soon.

Hicks in a statement said, "There will be litigation for sure". Currently Hicks also said that he could hold on to the team till August of next year which is a lot later then the October deadline to bring a resolution of the current crisis.

One of the biggest stories off the ice this summer is the bankruptcy of the Phoenix Coyotes and the number of people that could eventually own the team, the most controversy has come from Blackberry billionaire Jim Balsillie about buying the team and moving them to Hamilton, Ontario despite the NHL bringing all the stops to keep the Coyotes in Arizona.

I bring this up because Tom Hicks is smart enough to know that you should do anything possible to keep the team out of bankruptcy where it could be a free fall.

One of the other things that could happen is that if he sells either his half of Liverpool FC or the Texas Rangers that he could come up with enough money to pay off the loan payment much sooner and to free up room for the Dallas Stars when the 2009-2010 hockey season starts up in October.

Allen Americans Ice Angel squad

As the Allen Americans are preping for their first season in the Central Hockey League which begins on October 16. They are taking a part in a growing trend in hockey and that is having a dance squad. Over the last few weeks, the Allen Americans were having auditons for the Ice Angels squad where they were looking for cheerleaders and dancers to perform at the home games and to promote the team around the D/FW Area. The final squad has 11 dancers that will perform during games.

Of those that were their for the final audations were Stanley Cup Champion Craig Ludwig, Former Brahma player Craig Foddrill, and Amy Jo Mckinley who's a veteran of the Dallas Cowboys and Dallas Mavericks cheerleading squads. Bar-B-Cutie is the main sponsor of the dance group.

2009-2010 San Antonio Rampage Schedule

For the San Antonio Rampage, they are looking for a big strides after having a terrible year where they finished last in the West Division with a less then exciting 36-38-6 record for just 78 points and finishing well behind the playoff pace. Off the ice, the Phoenix Coyotes who are the teams NHL Affiliate have had their problems and it's affected the Rampage by having a lack of players to bring in to the team. For San Antonio, the playoffs have been a rare feat in recent years where the 2007-2008 season has been their only year they have made the playoffs at all in recent years. In a division that contains Houston, Milwaukee and Chicago who's looking to come back after a down year for the Wolves.

The Rampage will start the season on October against the expansion Texas Stars and then the next week, will play the Abbotsford Heat who recently moved from Quad City, Illinois where they will make their league debut in British Columbia.
